Lead Patient Transport
Major Responsibilities:Acts as a resource to team members, which includes conducting ongoing training/orienting, providing day-to-day work direction regarding workflow and giving input on performance. Assigns, monitors and reviews progress and accuracy of work, directs efforts and provides guidance on more complex issues. Escalates performance concerns to transport supervisor and transport manager.Monitors general department operations, makes work schedule adjustments as needed, issues daily work assignments and responds to requests for service.Transports patients, medical equipment, specimens, and other related items to their destinations. Lifts and transports patients to and from wheelchairs, stretchers or beds properly positioning and securing patients utilizing proper body mechanics.Contacts clinical staff immediately regarding changes to a patient's condition, or if a problem occurs with patient's equipment during transport.Responsible for the day-to-day workflow and provides work direction to employees. Coordinates patient transportation activities and provides guidance to staff.Monitors safety and reliability of transportation equipment and recommends purchase of new, replacement or upgraded equipment and accessories. Maintains equipment and reports equipment needing repairs.Notifies dispatcher when assignments are initiated, completed, delayed or cancelled. Advises when job priorities may need to be escalated.Responsible for identifying safety concerns and then entering safety events in risk management tool for appropriate follow up.May work as a transporter or dispatcher during high transport volumes and to complete necessary transport requests to ensure department goals & standards are met.Develops and promotes positive customer service relationships with patients, patient family members, visitors and staff. Ensures accurate, timely dispatch of transport requests. Ensures maximum staff productivity. Resolves problems related to patient, visitor, staff or employee complaints. Recommends solutions for ongoing or recurring issues. Assists with projects and quality improvement efforts.
Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) needs to be obtained within 6 months unless department leader has determined it is not required.
Education Required:High School Graduate.
Experience Required:Typically requires 2 years of experience in patient transport.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:Excellent Communication Skills Demonstrated experience in customer serviceSatisfactory completion in safe patient handling for transporters within one month of start date.Ability to assess status of equipment to ensure it is in safe working condition.Ability to assess and determine the best routes within hospital to reach desired destinations.Have a strong understanding of the operational functions within the patient transport department.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:Must be able to walk up to 95% of the workday.Must be able to sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bent and twist at various times throughout the workday.Exposed to blood and body fluids, contagious diseases, biohazrardous materials and radiation hazards throughout the workday, therefore, protective clothing must be worn as necessary.Must be able to operate all equipment necessary to perform the job, including repetitive use of feet required in working with surgical carts.Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance. For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other team member, when available. Unique patient lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
