National Grid is hiring an Economic Development Representative who will be responsible for implementing the company's economic development strategies and programs in Downstate New York – covering the company’s service territory of Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and Long Island. This position will be located in either Brooklyn, NY or Melville, Long Island. The position will support National Grid's business growth, community and stakeholder engagement objectives while promoting economic vitality in communities across the State of New York.
 

Job Purpose

•    Manage National Grid economic development programs, projects and activities within the assigned region(s), in order to support the Company’s strategy and enhance National Grid’s reputation as a leader in economic and community development.   
•    Represent National Grid in the community and engage with government, business, regulatory and other economic development stakeholders
•    Meet with stakeholders such as government officials, developers, and the public regarding development plans 
•    Develop and utilize economic development incentive programs and relationships with peer groups to support NY Corporate Affairs leadership in their role as the local face of National Grid.
•    Help establish connections between regulatory and community priorities and the company, including achieving a decarbonized future.  
•    Absorb, apply and share professional best practice within the National Grid Economic Development and Corporate Affairs teams.
•    Maintain day-to-day relationships with key stakeholders such as state, regional and local economic development agencies, community leaders and elected officials in order to understand their requirements and deliver appropriate solutions, in line with National Grid policies and processes.
•    Interact on a daily basis with executives representing economic development organizations, commercial/industrial customers and government agencies in support of economic and community development projects.
•    Collaborate with National Grid colleagues in communications, community and stakeholder engagement, government relations, strategic account management, legal, regulatory and operations on projects and programs as well as proactive management of issues – engaging with elected officials in such events as appropriate.
•    Provide awareness to elected officials of company programs and initiatives that support customers and communities served by National Grid.
•    Develop and manage ongoing stakeholder relationships and strategic partnerships in order to maximize value from the Company’s economic development activities and deliver solutions that benefit both the external party and National Grid.

•    Works with state economic development officials and other development agencies, using basic data or a solid business case to advance economic development programs consistent with State and local objectives and the company’s mission.
•    Identifies and understands the impact of economic development initiatives on state, regional and local development agencies and communities.
•    Proactively makes changes to improve performance, efficiency and effectiveness in order to position the company as an environmentally and socially responsible institution.
•    Receptive to change and is willing to evolve ideas or opinions based on new information or changes to the marketplace.
•    Collaborates across and within teams.
•    Demonstrates initiative and self-leadership while helping the broader team achieve its goals.
•    Strong existing relationships with stakeholders at the municipal and state levels.
•    Proven track record of success in economic development.
•    Strong negotiating and influencing skills with the ability to adapt presentations considering what is important to a variety of audiences.
•    Able to grasp complex issues, seeing multiple relationships and identifying likely causes in order to explain them to state, regional and local economic development agencies, community leaders and elected officials.
•    Committed to achieving or exceeding challenging goals aimed at improving the position of the company as an environmentally and socially responsible institution.
•    Understanding and interest in public policy, sustainability, and energy issues.
 

 

Qualifications

•    A Bachelor's degree in economics, finance, public policy, urban/regional planning, political science or related field and at least 5+ years related experience, or equivalent work experience.
•    Experience in implementing proactive strategies to position the company as an environmentally and socially responsible institution and project the Company's commitment and values.
•    Experience in engaging with stakeholders such as state/local development agencies, private developers, customers and regulators.
•    Experience in managing business customer relationships and designing customer solutions.
•    Ability to manage a large and diverse workload involving multiple stakeholder groups and multiple complex projects. 
•    Desire and drive to provide excellent service to clients. 
•    Effective Project Management skills. 
•    Effective verbal and written communication skills. 
•    Possession of a valid driver's license, and an ability and willingness to use personal vehicle on company business. 
•    Availability for evening and weekend meetings. 
•    Travel within National Grid USA service territory.  
•    Knowledge and experience in economic development sufficient to independently lead programs and projects.  
•    Experience in managing customer relationships and presenting to community groups, businesses and professional organizations.         
•    Knowledge of relevant economic development practice and legislation, current trends within the industry, and developments in legislation or regulation.

Salary

$127k - $150k a year

This position has a career path which provides for advancement opportunities within and across bands as you develop and evolve in the position; gaining experience, expertise and acquiring and applying technical skills.
