Department Summary:

MITRE's Applied Software Engineering Department focuses on rapid software prototyping and proof of concept development across a wide range of sectors, including defense, homeland security, health, space, and law enforcement. Leveraging agile methodologies, the department provides comprehensive support throughout the entire software lifecycle. Its core competencies enable the department to swiftly respond to sponsor needs, delivering innovative solutions that address complex challenges in various domain areas.  

Roles & Responsibilities:

As a Lead Software Systems Engineer at MITRE, you will enjoy a collaborative environment where you will work closely with others in an organization that encourages and values collaboration, mentoring, and continuous learning.  You will have the opportunity to leverage and grow your hands-on software engineering expertise as you contribute to real challenges across a variety of domains.

While responding to these challenges, you will leverage and grow your hands-on skills with software design and development, engaging in the full software engineering lifecycle using modern technologies.
 

Play a trusted technical leadership role in helping government sponsors apply modern software engineering methodologies and software development best practices to mission critical systems.Provide deep subject matter expertise and/or lead software design and development effortsDesign, architect, prototype, and integrate software solutions that solve complex technical challengesDevelop and test software based on project requirements and specifications.Collaborate with team members to design innovative software solutions.Write clean, scalable, and efficient code using programming languages like Java, C++, Python, etc.Debug and troubleshoot software to resolve issues and improve performance.Participate in code reviews to maintain code quality and share best practices.Assist in the documentation of software, including user manuals and technical reports.Continually update technical knowledge and skills by attending workshops, reviewing professional publications, etc.Contribute to all phases of the software development lifecycle, including ideation, design, development, testing, and deployment.Work closely with project managers to ensure timely delivery of software projects.Adhere to best practices in software development and the company's internal procedures and standards.

Basic Qualifications:

Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, related STEM major; or 6 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 3 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.Applicants selected for this position will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or applicants who are eligible for security clearances.To understands software processes and be fully responsible for deliverables – including definition, completion, and technical quality

Capable of defining and leading projects or programs with experience in both task leadership and managementDemonstrated ability to establish a trusted business network and engage with project leaders in defining and shaping work that aligns within the division’s strategic directionAbility to deliver thought leadership and partner across organizational boundariesTechnical stature that includes a track record of journal publications and conference presentationsProven ability to develop software systems while taking on growing responsibility for analysis, design, implementation, and deployment tasksExperience mentoring and leading technical teams in a distributed environment to develop and deliver both prototype and production software that spans the full tech stack, from the back-end to the front-endDemonstrated success across the entire software lifecycle, from design/architecture to agile development, testing, continuous integration, deployment (CI/CD), and supportStrong fundamental knowledge of computer science, especially algorithms and data structures germane to the development of high-quality, efficient softwareMastery of multiple programming languages, such as Java, C/C++/Objective-C/C#, Kotlin, Python, Python3, Go, NodeJS, JavaScript, Ruby, HTML5, MySQL, MongoDB, GIT, including at least one front end framework (Angular/React/Vue)Experience with building applications and deployment in scalable environment using Docker and KubernetesTrack record of architecting, delivering, and operating mission critical, large scale software systems in production cloud (Azure, AWS) and on prem environmentsDocumented success applying DevSecOps concepts in both developing new systems and improving existing systemsDemonstrated success with Agile practices and frameworks (SAFe, Scrum, Kanban)Solid understanding and experience with operational Cyber concepts and objectivesAn entrepreneurial spiritExcellent written and verbal communication skills
