Lead Systems Engineer

Purpose:

We are seeking an experienced Lead Systems Engineer/Database with expertise in Oracle, PostgreSQL, and NoSQL databases. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in database design, performance optimization, security, and automation. This role involves leading the database administration team, ensuring high availability, scalability, and security of our databases, and implementing automated deployment and update processes.

Minimum Eligibility Requirements:

Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.

Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience as a database administrator with a focus on Oracle, PostgreSQL, and NoSQL databases. Experience with automated deployment tools and CI/CD pipelines is essential.

Skills:

Strong knowledge of SQL and database design principles.

Proficiency in scripting languages such as Python, Perl, or Bash.

Experience with database administration tools like Oracle Enterprise Manager and SQL Server Management Studio.

Understanding of operating systems (Windows, Linux).

Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure) is a plus.

Excellent problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills

Experience with Agile methodologies and version control systems like Git.

Knowledge of containerization technologies

Essential Job Functions:

Database Design and Implementation: Design, develop, and implement complex database applications across Oracle, PostgreSQL, and NoSQL platforms to meet diverse user needs. Ensure databases are optimized for performance, reliability, and security.

Performance Tuning and Optimization: Analyze and optimize database performance using tools like Oracle Enterprise Manager, PostgreSQL's pg_stat_statements, and other monitoring solutions. Implement query optimization techniques and resource management strategies to ensure efficient database operations.

Security and Compliance: Implement robust security measures, including user roles and permissions, encryption, and audit logging. Ensure compliance with relevant data privacy regulations such as GDPR and HIPAA.

Backup and Recovery: Develop and manage robust backup and recovery strategies using tools like Cohesity, CommVault, and/or other backup solution integrated with Oracle RMAN. Implement point-in-time recovery (PITR) and regularly test backup systems.

Automation and Deployment: Design and implement automated deployment scripts for database schema changes, updates, and patches using tools like Ansible or Jenkins. Ensure continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD) pipelines are integrated with development workflows.

Team Leadership: Supervise and manage the daily activities of the database administration team. Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and training to ensure team members are equipped to handle complex database tasks.

Collaboration and Communication: Work closely with developers, system administrators, and management to align database strategies with business objectives. Communicate complex technical concepts effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Problem-Solving and Troubleshooting: Diagnose and resolve complex database issues using analytical skills and technical expertise. Engage with the community and leverage support channels for guidance on challenging problems.

Working Conditions (travel & environment)

This position is salaried, knowing it may include hours which exceed eight hours in a day or forty hours in a weekLimited travel may be required including air and/or car travelWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally be exposed to a warehouse environment and moving vehicles.  The noise level in the work environment is typically quiet to moderate.

PHYSICAL/SENSORY    REQUIREMENTS

Sedentary Work – Ability to exert 10 - 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.  Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time.
