From the start of Sustained Commercial Operations until Decommissioning of New Shepard, this role is responsible for maintaining the human flight certification baseline on New Shepard.
This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable space flight. This role is part of the New Shepard program. New Shepard is a reusable, suborbital rocket system designed to take astronauts and research payloads past the Kármán line – the internationally recognized boundary of space. Through operational reusability, New Shepard supports our mission of lowering the cost of access to space.
As part of a hardworking team of diverse specialists, technicians, and engineers, you will be part of integrating the design, test, build, and operation of various spaceflight systems for New Shepard. You will ensure that we achieve our goals by applying and growing your systems engineering skills to achieve and expand the bold operational goals of the system. You will work closely with key New Shepard leaders, Lead System Engineers, subject matter experts, and nontechnical stakeholders. We will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your dedication and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable spaceflight!
Responsibilities:Once initially certified, act as the owner of the engineering baseline for New Shepard, maintaining it per the New Shepard Human Flight Certification Plan. This includes but is not limited to system safety analyses, verification artifacts, requirements, mass properties, safety and flight risk management, and other systems engineering artifacts required to ensure the New Shepard certification baseline supports continued human flights.
Provide anomaly resolution support during launch campaigns
Lead post flight data reviews and integrated anomaly resolution between launch campaigns
Enforce the high bar for technical accuracy and engineering fidelity in alignment with New Shepard standards
Engage with design facing LSEs on certification changes
Work with the NSOM Engineering Director to improve engineering processes and drive systems thinking across all roles within NSOM.
Support FAA licensing maintenance under Part 450 CFR
Minimum Qualifications:B.S. degree in Engineering, or relevant technical field.
7+ years of proven system development and integration experience – preferably within the aerospace industry or working directly with safety critical systems
Industry practice in Systems Engineering tools and processes.
Deep curiosity with a focus on finding solutions, navigating ambiguity, and enthusiasm for tackling complex challenges
Self-directed and capable of balancing several tasks at one time.
Proven ability to work effectively and collaborate in a dynamic, fast paced, team-oriented environment.
Travel expected up to 25% of the time
Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion.
Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
Preferred Qualifications:Successful candidates will typically have 7-12 years of aerospace engineering experience including:
Acting as an individual contributor while leading a team by influence.
Leading root cause investigations or analysis
Familiarity with a broad range of engineering disciplines (e.g. mechanical, fluids, structures, propulsion, aerodynamics, control systems, etc.)
Configuration management
Design, analysis, test, maintenance, and/or certification of aerospace safety critical systems.
Launch vehicle or spacecraft operations.
Engagement across full lifecycle including launch and maintenance operations
Software tools such as DOORS, MATLAB/Simulink, Confluence, JIRA, Git, Creo, and Windchill
Reliability, maintainability and supportability definition and execution
System Safety analyses including but not limited to FMECAs, FTAs, and FHAs
Basic project management skills including labor estimating and schedule management.
Compensation Range for:
WA applicants is $140,959.00-$197,342.25Other site ranges may differ
