Department: Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases
The Department of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases in the School of Pathology of the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand, is a highly productive, research-intensive department covering a wide array of infections (bacterial, mycobacteria, fungi and parasites) affecting humans in communities and hospitals. This work directly impacts the understanding, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of human disease. The department teaches approximately ten programs and is managed by several course coordinators. A significant emphasis is on modernizing the curriculum towards a blended approach incorporating novel technologies including artificial intelligence. The department offers postgraduate courses at honours, master s and doctoral levels. The Department has active teaching and research programs covering basic science, translational research and clinical application of diverse aspects of Clinical Microbiology.
The Department has a vacancy for an enthusiastic senior lecturer
To lead the teaching program in the department and co-ordinate the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students taking microbiology and infectious disease courses
To support and lead efforts towards modernizing all the undergraduate and postgraduate microbiology and infectious disease courses using new approaches
To conduct research in clinical microbiology and supervise postgraduate students
Brief DescriptionKey responsibilities include the following:
Lead the planning of the teaching program in the Department
Coordinate and support modernizing of the teaching courses and learning events taught in the Department
Lecturing of undergraduates and postgraduate students
Oversee course alignment with the Faculty and University teaching and learning plan
Setting, invigilating, marking and moderating examinations
Undertake course evaluation, monitoring and evaluation
Participation in relevant Committees of the School and Faculty
Undertake relevant administrative duties in the Division, School and Faculty
Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate student
Execute research within an area of expertise and interest.
Requirements:
Qualifications: MBChB or other health professional degree at Masters level in health sciences.
Having an MBChB qualification with specialization in Microbiology will be a significant advantage
Teaching experience at the undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels
Must be computer literate and able to use software to execute the above duties
