Department/College Background The Department of Communication Sciences and Disordersat The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley ( UTRGV ) offers both a major in American Sign Language ( ASL ) and Interpretation and a minor in ASL Studies. Enrollment figures indicate ASL courses are in great demand. Often, ASL courses not only meet capacity but have students waitlisted. Minimum Qualifications Minimum Education Required: Master’s degree or higher in the area of ASL , Deaf Studies, Deaf Education, Linguistics, or Interpretation. Minimum Experience Required: Three (3) years of experience teaching. Discipline Specific Required Qualifications Evidence of Proficiency in American Sign Language (e.g., minimum ASL Proficiency Interview score of 3.0 and/or national or state ASL interpreter certification). Preferred Qualifications Some experience in teaching in higher education is preferred, and evidence of service (local, state, and/or national). As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas ( TRS ), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program ( ORP ) instead of TRS , subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
