RC SPANISH PROGRAM:
The Residential College Spanish Program (https://lsa.umich.edu/rc/current-students.html) is one of five intensive semi-immersion language programs that combine rigorous linguistic training with curricular flexibility and a high degree of interaction between students and instructors. The core of instruction lies on a sequence of two intensive 8-credit courses that prepare students to attain advanced proficiency as measured in a comprehensive exam testing:

a. ability to summarize a non-edited written journal article and a 25-minute oral lecture; b. control of advanced syntax and morphology in context; c. development of argumentative writing, and c. communication skills in a spontaneous conversation with a native speaker during a fifteen-minute interview. Successful students participate in advanced seminars on social, cultural or political issues with instructors from different disciplinary backgrounds and develop a heightened awareness on some of the most pressing issues in the Spanish-speaking world. During their studies in the program students attend regular lunch tables and coffee hours with different instructors in an immersion system where they acquire functional, communicative command of the language in spontaneous linguistic exchanges. Studying languages at the Residential College is a distinctive empowering experience that fosters a sense of community among students working non-competitively towards an academic goal.
