Legal Instruments Examiner (Inmate Classifications & Computation Technician)

Responsibilities Serves as an Inmate Classification & Computation Technician located within the Designations and Sentence Computation Center (DSCC) for the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Responsible for Judgment & Commitment files, sentence computations, release audits of computations, computation case audits, security and control of records, and initial inmate classifications for designations. Collects all necessary information from the US District Court, US Marshal Service and US Probation Office, or other authorities needed to request and provide designation and compute inmates’ sentences. Serves as a subject matter expert, assisting institution staff with responses to questions and interpretations of status and case law within their respective field. Additional information about CTAP eligibility is at: Click Here Qualifications To be considered for the position, you must meet the following qualification requirements: Education GL-05: Successfully completed 4 years of education above the high school level in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college or university. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school. GL-06: As a general rule, education is not creditable above GL-5 for most positions covered by this standard; however, graduate education may be credited in those few instances where the graduate education is directly related to the work of the position. OR Experience GL-05 and GL-06: You must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade level in federal service. To be creditable, this experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular qualifications to perform successfully the duties of the position, and must typically be in or related to the position to be filled. Some examples of the qualifying specialized experience are: GL-05: Experience reviewing legal documents and organizing records. Experience using a legal resource to interpret information. Experience communicating with other agencies to obtain legal information. GL-06: Experience initiating and composing standardized legal documents routinely needed for legal actions. Experience establishing, maintaining or closing case files or systems of legal records and abstracting data from files and records. Experience with the security and control of records, verifying authenticity of court orders, and parole actions. OR Combination of Education and Experience GL-05 Only: Combination of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total experience requirements at grades GS-5 and below. If applicable, credit will be given for paid and unpaid experience. Additional Information This position IS included in the bargaining unit. The representative rate for this position is $73.831 per annum ($35.38 per hour) for applicants eligible for law enforcement officer (LEO) coverage; and $71,660 per annum ($34.34 per hour) for all other applicants. NOTE: Salary ranges for all grade levels include both LEO and non-LEO salaries. LEO salaries apply to current LEO employees. Special Conditions of Employment Section: Appointment is subject to satisfactory completion of a urinalysis, physical, and background investigation. Current Federal Law Enforcement Employees: A prerequisite of the secondary law enforcement position is the completion of the mandatory courses in "Introduction to Correctional Techniques Phase I and Phase II". If you have not completed the mandatory courses in "Introduction to Correctional Techniques Phase I and Phase II", you are ineligible for secondary law enforcement position(s) and coverage but may still be considered for a non-law enforcement position. If you are not a current Bureau of Prisons employee, you must submit training records demonstrating you have completed the mandatory courses in "Introduction to Correctional Techniques Phase I and Phase II" to your hiring Human Resource office prior to appointment. Individuals selected who are under the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) or Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) and who have not had three years "primary" law enforcement retirement coverage, will not be covered by law enforcement retirement while in this position. To regain coverage, individuals must return to a position with "primary" coverage.
