Massachusetts State Representative Kate Lipper-Garabedian is seeking applicants for the position of legislative aide. Representative Lipper-Garabedian serves the people of the 32nd Middlesex District, which includes all of Melrose and portions of Wakefield and Malden. She serves as the Chair of House Committee on Ethics. Representative Lipper-Garabedian started her career with Teach for America as a seventh-grade public school teacher in an economically disadvantaged neighborhood of Atlanta. After graduating from Harvard Law School, she worked as a judicial clerk in the federal courts and then as an education legal consultant for states, school districts, colleges and universities, and nonprofit organizations on efforts to improve outcomes for children and students. She served as the Chief Legal Counsel at the Massachusetts Executive Office of Education and as a Melrose City Councilor before being elected into the House of Representatives in 2020. In the previous two legislative sessions, she was House Vice Chair of the Joint Committee on Elder Affairs (now Aging and Independence). The Massachusetts House of Representatives is comprised of 160 elected Members, each representing a district of approximately 45,000 people. The Legislative Aide assists the Member in the discharge of that Member’s official duties by providing communication, legislative, strategic, and administrative support. The Legislative Aide will support Representative Lipper-Garabedian with the daily operation of the office including in the following responsibilities: · Provide administrative support including, but not limited to, managing the Representative’s calendar, answering phones and taking messages, and other tasks as may be assigned; · Manage constituent inquiries and casework, including maintenance of database of constituent requests, and as liaison with constituents; · Draft compelling communication materials across multiple social media platforms as well as press releases; · Serve as a liaison with federal, local, and other state government offices; · Research and draft correspondence to constituents, stakeholders, and other interest groups on matters of interest; · Monitor and track legislation; · Prepare summaries of legislation and briefing materials on various topics; · Attend meetings and forums on behalf of the Representative; and · Supervise interns and coordinate with the House intern program. The Legislative Aide must be able to operate effectively in a fast-paced office environment, interfacing with different communities and personalities in a professional manner and successfully tracking and leading on a variety of work streams. The Aide must multi-task effectively, work independently, and meet deadlines, maintaining open lines of communication with the Representative regarding expectations. Research, analytical, and interpersonal skills are critical as are strong writing and communication skills. Applicants should have strong organizational skills, including for prioritization of tasks, calendar, and email management. Preferred Education and Work Experience: · Bachelor’s degree with at least one year of professional work experience, · Associate degree with more than one year of professional work experience, or · High school diploma with more than two years of professional work experience. Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: This is a full-time, minimum of 37.5 hour per week position. Days of work are typically Monday through Friday. Hours vary and occasionally may include evening and weekend work to support the Member’s legislative or constituent activities.
