What Do We Do?

Business Unit: R&D Library

We provide technical research support to any Carpenter staff in need of assistance.

Ongoing Projects

Our company started in 1889! That means we have a lot of documentation to organize. Our primary focus is digitizing and cataloging our technical knowledge into our knowledge management repository, to make research and discovery easy for staff. We provide resources for internal and external research.

Your Role as an Intern

You will be a part of a dynamic team, supporting the following tasks:

Primary focus of the internship is digitizing and cataloging technical materials into our Knowledge Management Repository.Additional projects will be assigned as needed and time permits. There will be time devoted to learning how a technical research library in a steel mill operates, the services we provide and overall what to expect in a special library environment.

What Do We Require?

You must be:

Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program majoring in Library Science or Information ScienceCandidates must have completed a basic cataloging course to be considered for this internship.Ideal candidates will possess the following characteristics: ability to work independently and as part of a teamMinimum 3.0 GPAWilling and able to work on-site at our Reading, PA location.Applicants MUST be US Citizens or Green Card Holders due to Carpenter’s government contracts.

Pay Range

Hourly rates are based on: 1 – Program of study; 2 – Degree type (i.e., Bachelor’s); 3 – Progression in degree (i.e., 1st year, 2nd year, etc.). The range for this position is $22.00 - $25.00 per hour for undergraduate students and $30.00-$35.00 for Masters level students.

Commuting/Housing Assistance (If Eligible)

Interns who must commute to work from outside the immediate Reading, PA area (over 50 miles one-way), will be paid a one-time lump sum payment of $2,400 (less applicable taxes) as excessive commute allowance. Interns who choose to temporarily relocate from outside the immediate Reading, PA area (moving over 50 miles one-way), will be paid a one-time lump sum payment of $4,800 (less applicable taxes) as a housing allowance. If applicable, this payment would be made during the first payroll cycle, which would be three or four weeks following the internship start date.
