The preferred hiring amount for this part-time position is $15.00 hourly. This is a 20-hour regular part-time, non-exempt position and is eligible for prorated benefits. This position shelves library materials according to Dewey Decimal system, shelf reads the stacks, shifts books as required, receives patron inquiries and takes appropriate action, maintains neatness of public areas, performs functions associated with reserves/holds list, works at public service desks, performs circulation functions as needed, and assists staff with various projects. Flexible schedule including evenings and weekends required. Work is performed at the Crozet Library. For more information about the Library and this position please go to: https://www.jmrl.org (https://www.jmrl.org/contact) Essential Responsibilities and Duties Organizes and maintains library materials, maintains neatness of public areas, performs basic equipment operations, performs circulation of library materials including but not limited to registering patrons, checking materials in/out, collecting fines/fees, and performs functions associated with holds on reserved materials. Education, Experience and Skills Minimum Qualifications: + High school diploma or GED equivalency required. + Experience using a public library. + Customer service experience. + Some familiarity with the Dewey Decimal System. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities: Knowledge and ability to shelve materials in order of call number; ability to perform procedures associated with maintenance of library materials; shelf reading, straightening and shifting collection as needed; knowledge of library policies and procedures; maintaining periodicals; maintaining neatness of public areas; ability to perform library circulation functions including registering patrons, checking materials in/out, placing patron holds and collecting fines and fees; knowledge and ability to use and/or set up library equipment such as computers, circulation software, copiers, cash registers, laminating machines and phones; knowledge of computer hardware; knowledge and ability to perform functions associated with holds on reserved materials. Physical Conditions & Additional Information Ability to push book trucks, carts, and bins weighing up to 30 pounds; ability to lift 30 pounds; ability to be able to stand up to four hours at a stretch. RETIREMENT: The City of Charlottesville manages its own retirement system and does not participate in VRS, however the City has a Portability Agreement with VRS. There are certain provisions that must be met and the portability request must be executed within 18 months of vesting in the City's Plan. + Pension: + Choose from two options: + A Defined Benefit Pension plan pays a monthly benefit in retirement using a defined formula based on the employee's earnings history, tenure of service, and age. Our plan has a 5 year vesting period and an employee contribution of 5% of salary. + A Defined Contribution 401a plan in which fixed contributions are paid into an individual's account by the employer, the contributions are invested, returns (positive or negative) are credited to the account, and the account balance is used to provide retirement benefits. The vesting schedule for our 401a plan is 33% after one year of service, 67% after two years of service, and 100% after three years of service. There is no required contribution from salary.
