Job Summary

The Library Specialist III, under general supervision, performs general library and customer service functions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Provides intermediate customer service for library customers including using virtual reference and chat venues. Responds to intermediate and difficult resource questions.

Provides support for advanced questions in research resources and databases and instructs library customers on accessing an extensive range of library online catalogs, research guides, physical collections and other electronic reference databases in various specialist areas of study.

Creates, maintains, and updates automated system records which contain complex elements.  

Processes routine and complex requests for library materials and information. Creates and edits online and other forms, documents, and other information for use on unit or library web pages or other media.

Identifies operational problems and recommends solutions. 

Updates unit-specific databases and spreadsheets.

Researches and gathers information for special projects.

May supervise subordinate staff and student employees.

Additional Responsibilities

Provides special collections and archival information reference services, assists patrons with the use of Library resources and equipment, handles cash for services, and enforces library guidelines/policies and general safety.

Receive archival materials and engage in related processes, including recording pertinent item information, assisting with accessioning of materials, and proper storage of materials.

Assist with Archives Reading Room service and maintenance, including recording and maintaining Special Collections statistics, developing and creating exhibits and public displays, assisting with promotional activities and outreach efforts, and coordinating office and archival processing supply requests.

Facilitate access to Special Collections and Archives materials, including the creation of Finding aids for archival collections, assist with the access and retrieval of items, the development and maintenance of online Library Research Guides, and scan, describe, and upload images of archival materials to our online repository.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Education – High school diploma

Experience – Five years of related experience in a public, academic, or specialized library or archive.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Knowledge and Abilities

.

Knowledge of:

Word processing and spreadsheet applications.

Difficult and varied library online research database searches and/or processing.

Ability to:

Multitask and work cooperatively with others.

Basic keyboarding skills.

Preferred Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:

General office practices and equipment, including answering phones, taking messages, filing, operating printers/copiers/scanners.

Demonstrated computer competency, including Microsoft Windows, MS Office, and Internet services or applications

Ability to:

Possess problem-solving skills, flexibility, and willingness to

Adapt to changing priorities and projects

Learn new skills and applications.

Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills/

Interact effectively with the general public and co-workers. 

Bilingual (English/Spanish) skills desired.

Time management skills.

Form and/or follow a detailed work plan.

Work independently as necessary.

Cash handling experience.

Licensing / Professional Certification – None.

Physical Requirements

Ability to move medium weight boxes, books, heavy book truck or similar items.

Ability to handle material which can contain dust or microscopic mold spores.

This position does not supervise employees.

Other Requirements

Position requires working evenings and weekends. 

Occasional overnight may be required.

Salary: $14.43/hourly
