Requires normal responsibility for: Following established methods and procedures; making routine contacts with the general public, outside organizations, and library personnel in connection with library operations and activities; and preparing and/or maintain various files and records. + Processes orders, overdue accounts, library card applications, requests for library material, new books, additional copies, serials, documents, and other library material. + Changes and discharges library material. + Assists patrons in person, over the telephone and by correspondence regarding library policies, procedures and directional information; under supervision, assists patrons with routine questions and with the location of library material. + Searches for library materials; obtains information from bibliographies, files, records and other sources. + Does preliminary cataloging; makes proper entry of new serials; assigns Cutter numbers; + Files; prepares and/or maintains various files and records; writes routine correspondence; types; receives and records money; sorts books and prepares them for delivery to branch, main library, or for discard, or bindery. + Assists in opening and closing the branch or department and in keeping it orderly and pleasant; assists in inventorying the collection; assists in checking shelves for proper placement of books and for books in need of repair. + Instructs clerical and supportive staff and may supervise them. + Collaborates in the creation, preparation, and display of various reference materials and resources. + May assist in preparing an exhibit, display or other publicity material; may drive bookmobile and assist librarian in serving bookmobile patrons. + May create, maintain, and troubleshoot technical issues related to the Library’s website, intranet, and other electronic media systems; create, prepare, and organize audio, video, images, and graphics. + May lead and provide technical training to other Library staff. + May include additional duties as assigned. Distinguishing Features: The Library Technical Assistant I (3616) differs from class 3618 Library Technical Assistant II in that this class does not have supervisory responsibilities. However, in smaller branches this classification may be required to act as a lead worker over subordinate personnel. This class is further distinguished from class 3610 Library Assistant in that class 3610 performs less complex and less technical library work. Supervision Received/Exercised: The Library Technical Assistant I receive supervision from a Librarian and/or a Library Technical Assistant II, and may act as a lead worker over subordinate technical and clerical library personnel. Education: An Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Library Information Technology. Or Certificate: Completion of a Library Information Technology certificate program from an accredited college or university AND one (1) year of full-time verifiable experience in library work in the areas of technical services, circulation, cataloguing and/or information services, equivalent to the duties performed by class 3610 Library Assistant, in the City and County of San Francisco. Or Experience: Two (2) years of full-time verifiable experience in library work in the areas of technical services, circulation, cataloging and/or information services, equivalent to the duties performed by class 3610 Library Assistant, in the City and County of San Francisco. Special Conditions: 1. Some positions in this class may require possession of bilingual skills. Eligibles who do not possess the designated skills will not be appointed to bilingual positions. A language proficiency test may be administered prior to appointment to these positions. 2. May be required to push, pull and lift with assistance objects weighing fifty (50) pounds or more. 3. Some positions in this class may require possession of a valid California Driver’s License. The above minimum qualifications reflect special conditions associated with the position(s) to be filled. SELECTION PROCEDURES: After application submission, candidates deemed qualified must complete all subsequent steps to advance in this selection process, which includes the following: Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (Weight: Qualifying) Candidates will be required to complete a Minimum Qualifications Supplemental Questionnaire (MQSQ) as part of the employment application at a later time.  This MQSQ is designed to obtain specific information regarding an applicant’s experience in relation to the Minimum Qualifications (MQ) for this position. The MQSQ will be used to evaluate if the applicant possess the required minimum qualifications. Multiple Choice Examination (Weight: 100%): Candidates that meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in a written examination designed to measure knowledge, skills and/or abilities in job-related areas which may include but not be limited to: knowledge of library procedures, reference aids, library terminology, electronic resources, software applications, basic web editing and design, office procedures, the role of a public and/or school library in the community; ability to lead supporting staff; attention to detail and accuracy, including money handling procedures, operate office equipment, ability to learn and deliver training and support to others for software, hardware, and electronic media; ability to problem solve, multitask and manage deadlines, ability to establish and maintain relationships, ability to deal courteously and effectively with others, ability to maintain records and file, retrieve, code and index data and information, ability to communicate in writing clearly and concisely; read, review, write, and understand information such as forms, documents, instructions, and/or reports in English; ability to understand, give, and follow oral instructions in English. The multiple-choice exam will be administered either on a computer format. This is a standardized multiple-choice examination. In accordance with Civil Service Rule 111.11.4, inspection privileges do not apply to the questions and answers in this examination. The score that you achieve on this examination shall be valid and "banked" for three years, starting from the date of the examination. This means that, during this three-year time period, you will not be required to take this test again should you apply and be found eligible for a future announcement for which this particular test is used. If the test for this future announcement is held within 1 year of the date of this examination, your score will be automatically applied to that announcement. However, after 1 year, you have the option to either (a) apply your test score to the other announcement or (b) re-take the test. Re-testing is permitted no sooner than twelve months from the date of the examination and only in association with your eligibility for another announcement for which this test is used. Please note that, should you re-test, your re-test score would become your official score going forward since it is the most recent. If a significant modification is made to this exam in the future, the application of “banked” scores may no longer be appropriate. In such a rare circumstance, candidates with “banked” scores would be required to re-take the exam sooner than the three year period specified above. Candidates must receive a passing score on the examination in order to be placed on the resulting eligible list. Candidate scores on this examination may also be applied to other announcements involving other job titles, when directed by the Human Resources Director. The hiring department may administer additional position-specific selection procedures to make final hiring decisions. Qualified applicants will be notified by email of the exact time, date, and location of the examination. Eligible List/Score Report: A confidential eligible list of applicant names that have passed the civil service examination process will be created and used for certification purposes only. An examination score report will be established, so applicants can view the ranks, final scores, and number of eligible candidates. Applicant information, including names of applicants on the eligible list, shall not be made public unless required by law. However, an eligible list shall be made available for public inspection, upon request, once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved. The eligible list/score report resulting from this civil service examination process is subject to change after adoption (e.g., as a result of appeals), as directed by the Human Resources Director or the Civil Service Commission. The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be of 12 months and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director.
