UPMC Hamot is hiring a Licensed Practical Nurse to join our 3 South Observation unit!
This position is full-time, 12-hour rotating shift schedule. Weekend and holiday coverage required.
**Observation/Short Stay Acute Care Unit (3 South)** : a 23-bed unit for adult medical-surgical patients needing care after failed outpatient treatment, unsuccessful emergency department care, or post-procedure recovery. It focuses on stabilizing patients, reassessing for discharge, or hospital admission

**Overview:** Act as a member of the health-care team by exercising sound nursing judgment based on preparation, knowledge, experience in nursing and competency. Depending on clinical area and training, may provide care and IV therapy following UPMC LPN Practice Guidelines and policies, and the State Board Regulations. The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) participates in the planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care using focused assessment in settings where nursing takes place under the direction of a Registered Nurse or other licensed UPMC provider.
**Responsibilities:**
+ Licensed to function as a member of the health-care team, exercising sound nursing judgment based on preparation, knowledge, experience, and competency.
+ Participates in planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care using focused assessment.
+ Seeks guidance from licensed professional nurses and health care team members when patient care needs exceed LPN scope of practice, surpass LPN's knowledge, skill, or ability, or when the patient's condition deteriorates, changes significantly, or requires immediate assistance.
+ Obtains instruction and supervision for new or unfamiliar nursing practices or procedures, and follows established policies, UPMC LPN Practice Guidelines, and State Practice Act.
+ Acts within LPN Practice guidelines, including IVs where trained and appropriate, formulates daily goals and care plans involving the patient as a partner, communicates patient condition to other care providers, and ensures comprehensive patient documentation.
+ Incorporates goals to improve patient safety, quality, and satisfaction, builds healing relationships with patients, families, and colleagues, actively participates in unit activities and assists care team members, provides detailed teaching to patients and families for care transitions, supports orientation and development of new LPNs and patient care staff, seeks feedback and engages in continuous professional improvement, and participates in organizational and system programs for continuous learning.
+ Identifies opportunities for clinical quality and workplace improvement, partners with health care team, patients, and families to achieve desired outcomes, maintains productive working relationships with accountability, enthusiasm, and commitment, understands cultural differences and promotes healthy relationships, balances work and personal life, models safe work hours, manages time effectively, and communicates safety hazards to peers and management.
+ Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors. Performs other duties as assigned.
+ Completion of a Practical Nursing Program approved by the State Board of Nursing.
+ IV therapy requirements: Must complete IV therapy curriculum. Graduates from 2012 onwards have IV therapy included in PA State Board Approved Programs. Graduates prior to 2012 need official proof of IV therapy program completion. LPNs without this training cannot perform IV therapy.
+ Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary for patient care across different ages. Understands principles of growth and development over the life span.
+ Assesses and interprets patient data to identify age-specific needs and provide appropriate care. Identifies process improvement opportunities to enhance patient care.
+ Collaborates with health care team, patients, and families to achieve desired outcomes. Establishes and maintains positive relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families.
+ Works productively and effectively in a complex environment, handling multiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment.
+ Requires mobility, visual manual dexterity, and physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting, and positioning of patients.
+ Computer skills needed to utilize the electronic health record.
**Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:**
+ Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) within one year of hire or transfer.
+ Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
+ Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)
+ NIH Stroke Scale (NIH) within 6 months of hire or transfer.
+ Act 34
+ In order to perform IV therapy, and if graduated prior to 2012, the LPN will need to provide official proof of completion of IV therapy approved program.
*Current licensure either in the state where the facility is located or, if the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state. Hires and current employees working on an out-of-state NLC license who later change their residency to the state where the facility is also located will have 60 days upon changing their residency to apply for licensure within that state.
