Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, an Inpatient Unit (IPU) Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides the necessary treatments, education, and documentation consistent with the inpatient unit environment care. The LPN provides nursing care via the nursing process, patient and family education and documentation under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.  The LPN supplements the nursing care needs of the patient as provided by the RN and as specified in the plan of care.

 

Location:  Sibley Hospital

 

Hours:  PRN

Responsibilities

Prepares clinical notes and progress notes documenting outcomes and interventions.  Assists the physician or registered nurse in performing specialized duties and procedures related to the end of life care.  Observes and reports patient/family response to care.  Prepares equipment and supplies for treatment that require adherence to sterile and aseptic techniques.  Assists the patient with activities of daily living, including teaching and learning self-care techniques.

Assumes responsibility for own professional growth and development including in-service and outside training.  Functions as a member of the interdisciplinary team.

Qualifications

Experience Requirements

The LPN must have one year of recent nursing experience. Experience in home care nursing and care of and working with the terminally ill and their families is preferred.

 

Education Requirements:

The LPN must have a LPN from a NLN accredited nursing program.

 

Required Certificates and/or Licenses:

The LPN must have medical licensure from the governing body for medical practice for the District of Columbia, State of Maryland, and/or the Commonwealth of Virginia.

 

Overall Skills:

 The ability to demonstrate superlative oral and written communication skills as well as ability to organize and manage projects within defined timeframe and budget; work both independently and as part of a team; demonstrate excellent interpersonal and collaborative; demonstrate organizational skills with ability to delegate and follow up; manage multiple tasks and stressful situations with a positive attitude; demonstrate a strong work ethic and attention to detail; perform a thorough nursing assessment.
