Posting Number NONAC3492 Job Title Life Sciences Technology Transfer Associate Position Title Life Sciences Technology Transfer Associate Position Type Non-Faculty Number of vacancies 1 Salary Department Sponsored Rsch Admin Position Summary The Life Sciences Technology Transfer Associate will play a pivotal role in fostering innovation and commercialization of research developments in the life sciences domain through a collaborative partnership among the Atlanta University Center (AUC), including Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM), Spelman College, Clark Atlanta University, and Morehouse College. This role will provide critical support to faculty, researchers, staff, and students at the AUC in facilitating the transfer of cutting-edge scientific discoveries to practical applications, including intellectual property (patents, copyrights, trademarks, and know-how) application filings, licensing, partnerships, and the creation of spin-off companies. This position is ideal for individuals passionate about technology transfer, entrepreneurship, and the integration of academic research with the broader biomedical and life sciences industries. The Associate will work closely with academic leaders, industry professionals, and stakeholders to bridge the gap between research and commercialization, contributing to the mission of both institutions to advance health equity and scientific discovery.
Working Conditions:
Hybrid work environment. Occasional travel may be required for meetings, conferences, or industry outreach.
Skills:
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and negotiation skills. Excellent written and verbal communication abilities. Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize tasks effectively. Knowledge of contract law, commercialization strategies, and technology evaluation methods.
Key Responsibilities:
Technology Evaluation and Management:
Identify promising life sciences innovations developed at MSM and other AUC for potential commercialization. Solicit and manage the evaluation of intellectual property (IP) disclosures, which include inventions, copyrights, and trademarks. Assist in evaluating the scientific and commercial potential of new technologies, including patents, licenses, and market feasibility.
IP Management:
Assist with patent filings and IP portfolio management, ensuring all innovations are appropriately protected. Manage and maintain an active portfolio of patents, ensuring timely renewal, monitoring, and maintenance of intellectual property rights. Provide ongoing support for faculty and staff regarding IP protection, patent law, and strategies for leveraging IP.
Industry and Commercial Partnerships:
Support the development of partnerships with pharmaceutical, biotech, agtech, and healthcare industries to promote the commercialization of IP. Facilitate collaborations with external organizations to advance research commercialization efforts. Cultivate relationships with
Outreach and Collaboration:
industry stakeholders, investors, and potential commercial partners. Serve as a liaison between MSM, the broader AUC, industry, and government entities to promote collaborative innovation.
Entrepreneurial Support:
Work with faculty, students, and researchers to explore entrepreneurial opportunities, including start-up ventures. Provide support for spin-off companies, including business development, strategic partnerships, and funding opportunities.
Regulatory and Compliance Support:
Ensure all technology transfer activities comply with institutional, federal, and state regulations. Stay informed of the latest trends, policies, and regulations in life sciences and technology transfer.
Education and Training:
Conduct and facilitate seminars, workshops, and training sessions for faculty, students, and staff on aspects of biotechnology, technology transfer, IP protection, and commercialization. Develop resources to guide researchers through the commercialization process.
Commitment to Diversity:
Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in academic and research settings. Minimum Qualifications Education:
Master’s degree in life sciences, biomedical engineering, or related field. A Ph.D. is a plus.
Experience:
At least 2 years of experience in technology transfer, commercialization, or research administration in the life sciences sector. Knowledge of intellectual property laws and the patent process. Experience managing and maintaining an intellectual property portfolio, including patent filings, renewals, and licensing. Familiarity with the biomedical/biotech industry landscape and the commercialization of life sciences innovations.
Preferred Qualifications Previous experience working in an academic or research institution. Familiarity with the specific regulatory and compliance requirements of the healthcare or pharmaceutical industry. Experience with grant writing, fundraising, or venture capital.
