Part-Time Lifeguard 

 

Job Overview:  

As a part-time, seasonal lifeguard, the primary responsibility is to prevent drowning and other injuries from occurring specifically within the designated swimming area you are supervising and generally anywhere on the lake. Lifeguards must be able to ensure the safety of patrons by minimizing or eliminating hazardous situations or behaviors. Lifeguards will need to solve on-the-job issues by utilizing effective critical thinking and decision-making skills and able to work with diverse populations. Lifeguards must be able to enforce community policies and be able to communicate effectively why policies are in place. 

Schedule 
Beginning Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, may be extended to weekends in September. May require some training and meetings in May. 

Hours: Rotating shifts, Monday through Sunday, 11am – 7pm 

Job Responsibilities:  

Supervises swimming activities at the community pool and ensures that policies, guidelines, and safety procedures are followed.  Warns swimmers of improper activities or danger and enforces pool regulations and water safety policies.  Administers first aid in the event of injury, rescues swimmers in distress or danger of drowning, and administers CPR and/or artificial respiration, if necessary.  Evaluates conditions for safety and initiates aquatics emergency action plan as required.  Inspects pool facilities, equipment, and water to ensure that they are safe and usable.  Supervises and assists in cleaning the pool and related facilities and equipment, assists with water tests and with records and charts of water tests and records of accidents as directed.  Instructs or assists classes in fundamentals of swimming as needed.  Resolve scheduling conflicts with co-workers to ensure appropriate coverage and safe pool environment when competing programs/priorities require use of aquatic facilities.  Show-up for your scheduled shifts as scheduled, on-time, properly attired and equipped for work (approved bathing suit, t-shirt, hat, whistle, clothes appropriate to the weather, sunscreen).  Record daily member attendance and participation numbers, and complete daily cleaning assignments.  Attend and participate in regular in-service training courses.  Provide a welcoming environment for all patrons.  Document any incidents and/or injuries.  Maintain a clean and tidy workspace.  Perform other duties as assigned. 

 

Skills & Qualifications:  

CPR Certification is required  Working Papers (as appropriate of staff under 18 years old)  Knowledge and ability to evaluate pool water conditions  Swimming proficiency and comfort in all types of water conditions  Ability to judge and evaluate evolving dynamics of individuals participating in aquatic activities to immediately assess their capabilities and threats to their safety  Knowledge of on-site protocols, operational procedures, and safety policies  Knowledge of methods and techniques for providing on-site emergency medical services  Naturally outgoing personality with good communications skills  Ability to react to emergency situations by quick movements, strenuous activity, and on occasion assist or lift persons in distress of varying weights.  Required to remain alert to dangerous situations while sitting, standing or walking for a minimum of 30 minute stretches. 

Experience and Licensing Requirements: 

Completed the 10th year of school (high school sophomore), and continued enrollment in school  Minimum of 6 months of related work or volunteer experience in customer service, childcare or water safety.  Certified American Red Cross Lifeguard Certificate, or equivalent  American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer, or equivalent  American Red Cross Standard First Aid, or equivalent  Experience in the hospitality or service industry  Experience and training in customer service is highly desirable.  Experience in an aquatic setting desirable.  Basic cleaning skills  Work in a team environment  Highly effective interpersonal skills, problem solving abilities, and advanced communication skills a plus.  Must present a professional image. Must be outgoing and able to work with all types of people.  Accountable for one’s own work, decisions and safety of oneself and safety of oneself and others.  Capable of working extended hours, including evenings, weekends and holidays as necessary.  Ability to respond to emergencies in a timely manner.  

 

Compensation:  

$16-18 per hour
