Lifeguard and Recreation Coordinator

The Lifeguard and Recreation Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the lifeguard team, pool facility, and recreation/activities events at the Hersheypark Camping Resort.

Job Duties:

Oversee lifeguard, recreation, and activities staff and pool operations including water testing and chemical balancing, water balance, equipment and mechanical inspections, and ensuring all health, safety, and pesticide codes are being followed.

Interview, hire, train, and oversee approximately 20 lifeguards and 2 to 4 recreation staff. Conduct pre-shift meetings with lifeguards and activities staff to motivate and follow up on any challenges.

Create schedules to provide adequate coverage for all pool functions. Monitor and approve employee requests, submit schedules in the company scheduling system, and edit timecards. 

Monitor, direct, and develop team member performance. Provide supervision, training, and professional development, conduct evaluations, deliver coaching opportunities, recognize, and reward staff.

Prepare materials and other resources to ensure the appropriate, timely, and thorough training for all lifeguard positions including lifeguard training classes, monitoring lifeguard certifications, and hosting weekly in-service training for lifeguards.

Ensure cleanliness of the facilities by enforcing and maintaining safety, health, and sanitation practices that meet guest expectations as well as property and state standards.

Handle guest requests, inquiries, concerns, and complaints in a professional and timely manner, seeking resolutions to ensure guest satisfaction.

Develop and execute daily, weekly, and themed events for guests. Support lifeguards and recreation staff by filling in as needed.

Complete first aid and rescue reports and submit via the company tracking system. Complete pool facility, lifeguard, and activities supplies inventory and requisition supplies based on the monthly budget.

Conduct and attend property meetings and communicate effectively with management, team members, and other stakeholders to provide updates. 

Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

18 years of age or older

Must have a valid Driver’s License

Minimum 1 year of related experience

Minimum 1 years of supervisory experience

Associate’s Degree and 1 year work experience in recreation setting; if no degree 2 years work experience in a recreation setting

Post-Employment - Within one month of employment, applicants must attend and pass the Jeff Ellis & Associates, Inc. Lifeguard Program. This is paid for by Hersheypark Camping Resort

Post-Employment - Within six months of employment, applicants must attend and pass the Jeff Ellis & Associates, Inc. Instructor Lifeguard/Supervisor Program. This is paid for by Hersheypark Camping Resort

Post-Employment - Within three months of employment, applicants must study for and pass the PA Department of Agriculture Pesticide Core Exam, the Category 24 Pool Chemical Exam and Category 23 Spray Exam. Paid for by the Hersheypark Camping Resort.

Post-Employment - Within one year of employment, applicants must study for and pass either the AFO (Aquatic Facility Operator) and/or the CPO (Certified Pool Operator). This is paid for by the Hersheypark Camping Resort

Post-Employment - Within two months of employment, applicants must attend and pass the CPR/First Aid/AED certification. This is paid for by Hersheypark Camping Resort

In accordance with Pennsylvania's Child Protective Services Law, candidates must be able to obtain and maintain a report of criminal history from the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP), Child Abuse History Clearance from the Department of Human Services (Child Abuse), and Fingerprint-based federal criminal history submitted through the Pennsylvania State Police or its authorized agent (FBI), as a condition of continued employment. 

This position is designated as Safety Sensitive and requires successful completion and passing of a pre-employment drug test.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Demonstrate leadership skills, excellent customer service skills, and a passion for lifeguarding and recreation.

Proven leadership skills including the ability to hire, direct, delegate, coach, train, counsel, and motivate employees.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively with guests, staff, and business partners.

Knowledge of pool facilities, safety regulations, and emergency procedures.

Ability to problem-solve, multitask, and prioritize tasks effectively. 

Must be proficient with computers and computer software, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Suite, property management system, email, payroll, and procurement software.

Must have experience in professional procedures, ordering, expenses, labor, and payroll.

Job Demands:

Schedule varies according to operational needs but includes evenings, weekends, and holidays.  Must be available to work varied shifts. Shifts can begin as early as 7am and end as late as 11pm.

Physical requirements require mobility and good physical condition. Must be able to walk, stand, bend, stoop, lift, carry, sit.

Employees are subject to a variety of weather conditions, including but not limited to: extreme heat, sun exposure, cold, and inclement weather. Work is almost exclusively outdoors.

Must be able to lift, pull, push, operate a maximum of 50 lbs.

Exposure to basic cleaning and pool chemicals.

Proper footwear and sunglasses must be provided by the employee.

This job requires a good sense of vision (either corrected or uncorrected).

Training for the position will be conducted by the Hershey Resort Properties through the International Pool and Lifeguard Training Program (Jeff Ellis & Associates). Applicants that are currently certified through American Red Cross or other Certification programs, are eligible to apply, but must be certified by Jeff Ellis & Associates.
