General Summary
Help support Parks and Recreation in their mission to enhance the quality of life for all through the stewardship of public land and parks and to provide quality recreational experiences. The City of Charlottesville is seeking candidates for Lifeguard II who are highly motivated and who strive for success by demonstrating Charlottesville's Core Values of Commitment, Integrity, Respect, Innovation, and Collaboration.
The hiring amount for this position is $19.00 or $19.50 an Hour ( $39,520.00 or $40,560.00 Annually). Starting offer is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity. This is a full-time, non-exempt, position which provides excellent benefits including 13 paid holidays plus 1 floating holiday, paid vacation and sick leave, health insurance options with employer contribution, employer-paid life insurance, City's retirement options, gym membership reimbursement (up to $34 a month), tuition reimbursement (up to $3,000 per fiscal year), and continuing education/training opportunities.

This position, in the absence of the Seasonal Pool Manager, manages the facility and has all of the responsibilities designated for the manager on duty. This includes pool operations, staff supervision, customer service and pool maintenance. Supervision is exercised over Lifeguard I, Customer Service Attendants, Instructors and other temporary, seasonal positions. Performs responsible semi-skilled and routine protective service work in supervising the safe use of public swimming facilities by pool visitors and aids troubled bathers in emergencies; performs related duties as required. Reports to the Seasonal Pool Manager or a Parks and Recreation Operations Specialist.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties
+ Continuously monitors and observes actions of swimmers and enforces water safety rules and pool rules;
+ Provides emergency lifesaving services to swimmers in need;
+ Takes part in training programs to improve lifesaving skills;
+ Reports all guest and employee situations to supervisor immediately;
+ Cleans the pool and related facilities on a regular schedule;
+ Informs management of needed supplies or equipment-related issues;
+ Follows all service standards and departmental policies and procedures;
+ May give swimming instructions to individuals or groups;
+ Responsible for the oversight of cash handling in the absence of management;
+ Assists with the management and maintenance of the facility, acting as manager on duty as required;
+ Performs related duties as required.
Education, Experience and Skills
Minimum Qualifications:
+ Must be 17 years or older by employment start date.
+ Minimum of three (3) months of experience with Charlottesville Parks and Recreation in a Lifeguard I position OR minimum of six (6) months of lifeguarding experience at other facilities.
+ Must possess a current Lifeguard/First Aid/CPR/AED certification.
+ Any combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job.
+ Must be available to work varied shifts including weeknights, weekends and holidays
+ Must pass periodic CPR audits.
+ Must complete training with Charlottesville Parks and Recreation to include but not limited to: in-service training, sexual harassment prevention training, water testing, chemical handling, cash handling, paperwork management and reporting.
Preferred Qualifications:
+ Certification in Oxygen Administration and Preventing Disease Transmission and Waterpark Skills Module is preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities : Ability to accurately evaluate aquatic situations and facility needs and make recommendations to management; ability to evaluate and communicate effectively with staff and assist lifeguards in improving performance; thorough knowledge of water safety rules and of life saving and first aid practices and techniques; general knowledge of the cleaning and maintenance requirements for large pools and related equipment and supplies preferred; considerable skill and strength in swimming; ability to enforce rules and regulations; ability to remain calm under pressure/stress.
Physical Conditions & Additional Information
Physical requirements of this position as outlined by the Department of Labor: MEDIUM: work involves exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, or an amount greater than negligible and up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
This position may be required to work weekends, nights, holidays, stand-by/on-call and/or weather-related emergency on-call.
This is a safety sensitive position subject to drug and alcohol testing for pre-employment, reasonable suspicion, post-accident and random testing.
Position may require driving a City-owned vehicle and is subject to the vehicle use policy and procedures.
The majority of time spent in this position involves outside work which may involve extreme temperatures, extreme brightness, chemicals/hazardous waste, gases/gas leaks, blood-borne pathogens, acidic or harsh substances, infectious bacteria and/or fumes/airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
