Line Locator
The Line Locator will support APTIM Resource Planning Branch at Redstone Arsenal by locating water, sewer, gas, steam, and electrical underground utilities/lines using maps and locating equipment. This position will coordinate digging clearances with maintenance personnel; read utility meters, and provide technical support to utility crews, contractors, excavators, and other utility companies. The Line Locator will also coordinate with Department of Public Works (DPW) in preparation of monthly meter reading Contract Data Requirements Lists (CDRL). Consults a variety of utility maps and operates various equipment including line tracer, dousing rod, and electronic and magnetic pipe locators to locate underground utility services in roads, streets, utility easements and other rights-of-ways. Calculates distances to ensure exact location, marks the locations of utilities using locating equipment, paint, and line tracers. Stays familiar with and learns use of new locating equipment; maintains locating equipment. Maintains daily logbook and prepares various reports and simple sketches and drawings. Reads utility meters and enters readings on log or handheld devices. Compares current utility usage with previous usage to ensure report/billing accuracy. Request repair on meters when readings are not in line with average readings. Respond to an emergency and demonstrate the ability to relay information and directions to maintenance personnel, other contractors, and government personnel. Proficient with Excel in order to prepare related reports as required by management and government customers. Performs other related duties and responsibilities as required. Maintain regular and punctual attendance. Work overtime as assigned. Travel overnight as required. Work cooperatively with other team members demonstrating a cooperative attitude, and the ability to problem solve. Interact with employees and customers in the workplace in an appropriate and tactful manner. Use a computer for tasks such as communicating effectively by email and preparing reports and work schedules using Microsoft and Excel software. Review and analyze data and information concerning meter readings. Plan, prioritize and monitor daily activities. Complete assigned tasks/projects in a timely manner. Comply with all Company policies and procedures. Works independently with general guidance and supervision. Accountable to the Resource Planning Supervisor for accomplishing all assigned functions in accordance with contract requirements, Army, Department of Defense (DOD), and applicable federal/state laws and codes. Must have adequate vision to read meters accurately. Must have the ability to do manual labor, to include lifting of meter pit lids. Must have the ability to perform simple mathematical calculations with speed and accuracy. Must be capable of walking long distances over uneven terrain in adverse weather conditions to complete meter routes and line location responsibilities. Preferred: Understand methods and means to locate buried utilities to include manual, electronic equipment, and devices used in location underground utilities. Knowledge of operation, maintenance, and construction methods of underground utility distribution systems necessary to perform locating functions. Knowledge of hazards associated with the excavation of underground utilities. Knowledge to maintain and repair locating equipment. Knowledge to determine the size and location of water and sewer lines. Read and interpret engineering plans, drawings, and sketches to the extent required to perform job functions. Prepare related reports and simple drawings and sketches.
