Job Description Summary:

Responsible for providing nursing care, administering medications, and documenting care in the patient's medical record for a designated group of patients under the direction of the RN. Under the general supervision of the Department Director, responsible for providing nursing care on assigned shift utilizing the nursing process and age-specific needs.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:Performs specified patient care with a high degree of skill, minimal discomfort to the patient, and minimal supervision.Administers medications, including IV therapy, to patients according to hospital policy; administers treatments, prepares for tests and surgery, and assists physicians with procedures and examinations.Ensures the proper segregation and safe disposal of hazardous pharmaceutical waste.Monitors and discontinues blood and blood products.*May not initiate.Receives and transcribes physicians’ orders as appropriate.Contributes to the development, implementation, and continuing evaluation of the patient care plan.Documents care in the patient’s record.Respond to medical emergencies, initiate CPR or appropriate action, and notifies appropriate personnel.JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:

Completion of a vocational school LPN program. Completion of a formal (school or agency) intravenous therapy training program.  

LICENSURE, REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION:

Current licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse as approved by the Tennessee Board of Nursing for practice in the state of Tennessee.Responsible for Continuing Education Units annually.BLS certification must be obtained within the orientation period, and certification must be kept current while in this position.ACLS certification must be obtained within the orientation period, and certification must be kept current while in this position.Special certifications may be required at the department’s discretion.  

EXPERIENCE:

Proficiency in pharmacology and documentation and the ability to demonstrate nursing skills according to current hospital and nursing policies and procedures as normally acquired through the successful completion of documentation class, pharmacology exam, and skills exam.Must have a minimum of 6 months experience as a Licensed Practical Nurse and must have attended a formal IV push medication training program prior to administering IV push medications.
