Provides organizational support to pre-admissions RN in processing pre-admissions paperwork. Utilizes nursing knowledge and judgment to facilitate preoperative assessments and instructions to provide optimum care for the patient.Job Responsibilities and Requirements:
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Conducts patient assessments via personal interviews unless otherwise indicated, providing the following to the patient: lab work instruction; NPO instructions; preoperative evaluation form which provides a personal history of the patient; medications, allergies, habit and past medical/surgical problems; a brochure with instructions that patients can take home; brochures for certain surgeries as available; spiritual needs or needs related to ADA.Identifies abnormal diagnostic data using lab work, EKG and chest x-ray.Identifies potential intraoperative patient problems, symptoms and behavioral changes in relation to individual patient needs.Participates in the assessment process which will enable all those in contact with the patient's care to recognize potential barriers such as medical problems, anxiety, medication taken, and/or the ability to understand indicated procedures, etc. Coordinates with other team members and physicians utilizing assessment data.Provides preoperative instructions for the patients and family members that are consistent with hospital policies and procedures.Attempts to contact all outpatient surgical patients via telephone within 48–72 hours to ascertain current patient condition including home care, effects of anesthesia and nursing care during their outpatient stay. Educates patients regarding possible complications and subsequent care options.Communicates with the patient to reduce anxiety. Documents and/or notifies physicians and other health care members of the patient’s needs and responses. Interacts effectively with other team members to keep them informed of changes in the patient’s condition.Assists in staff’s development and revision of procedures and related items pertaining to the pre-admission of surgical patients.Keeps appropriate department head informed of any problems or needs.As an SSM Health nurse, I will demonstrate the professional nursing standards defined in the professional practice model. Uses the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses to guide his/her response to the current and evolving health and nursing needs of our patients and our patient populations.Works in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.Performs other duties as assigned.EDUCATION
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing or education equivalency for licensingEXPERIENCE
One year licensed practical nurse experiencePHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Constant use of speech to share information through oral communication.Constant standing and walking.Frequent lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 0-25 lbs.Frequent sitting, reaching and keyboard use/data entry.Frequent use of vision and depth perception for distances near (20 inches or less) and far (20 feet or more) and to identify and distinguish colors.Frequent use of smell to detect/recognize odors.Frequent use of hearing to receive oral communication, distinguish body sounds and/or hear alarms, malfunctioning machinery, etc.Occasional lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 25-50 lbs.Occasional lifting/moving of patients.Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting, gripping and repetitive foot/leg and hand/arm movements.Occasional driving.Rare crawling and running.REQUIRED PROFESSIONAL LICENSE AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS
