Position Summary:

Under the supervision of an RN, carries out and documents assigned tasks and nursing interventions as addressed on the care plan, and reviews and revises the nurses care plan.

Ø  Monitors each patient for the physical and psychosocial needs and alters plan of care as discussed with RN and has input into acuity levels, prepares for OR, and special procedures.

Ø  Administers medication by all routes, performs venipuncture and IV therapy after training is complete.

Ø  Directs and assists in the supervision of Nursing Assistants and UC staff.

Ø  Provides nutritional support as necessary (oral, enteral, peripheral) except Hyperalimentation.

Ø  Evaluates, communicates and documents care delivered to other members of the health care team through shift report, nursing care plans, progress notes/nursing notes, direct communications to team members, etc.

Ø  Inserts, monitors and maintains NG tubes, urinary caths, etc.

Ø  Assists physicians with exams, dressing changes, etc. as necessary.

Ø  Receives physicians' orders, records, and completes.

Ø  Assists with discharge instruction to patient and/or family regarding necessary information to continue care at home.

Ø  Utilizes both Infection Control and safety policies and procedures to ensure a safe environment.

Ø  Recognizes emergency situations and responds appropriately.

Ø  Reviews and performs shift assessments and reports any variations/concerns to RN.

Ø  Gives and receives report on assigned patients.

Ø  May be required to perform other assignments from time to time as requested by the Department Leader.


Position Requirements:  Current Virginia License at time of hire date or must be able to show eligibility for licensure.

Education/Experience:  No previous clinically related nursing experience required.  The employee will complete a general orientation program of sufficient duration and content to prepare them for specific duties in the hospital within thirty (30) days of hire date.  Unit specific orientation is completed on the nursing unit.

Special Qualifications:  Must meet and maintain proficiency requirements of the unit.  CPR card holder is required.
