Summary:

The work is done directly under the surgeon/physician's guidance under the direction of the unit manager, assistant nurse manager, and RN service leads to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures.

The Licensed Practical Nurse must possess expertise in the theory and application of aseptic technique and demonstrate the ability to combine knowledge of human anatomy, the surgical process, and procedures, including instrumentation and advancing technologies. The licensed practical nurse will be able to anticipate the needs of the surgeons/physicians by constantly assessing the surgical process and patient condition to promote a safe, expedient, and quality surgical outcome. These skills will facilitate the surgeon's/physicians' performance of minimally invasive, invasive surgical procedures and invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. The Licensed Practical Nurse must function proficiently in various surgical specialty services.

The Licensed Practical Nurse provides patient care primarily through service to the physician/ surgeon. The Licensed Practical Nurse is expected to understand the procedure being performed, anticipate the needs of the surgeon/physician, and have the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure while monitoring the sterile field. The Licensed Practical Nurse is accountable for maintaining skills and knowledge to function commensurate with their assignments and within the policies and procedures of the department. This description covers the essential functions of the position. The incumbent is expected to perform other similar and/or related duties as assigned after demonstrating competency.

Job Responsibilities:

1) Collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to maximize technological and human resources to achieve positive patient outcomes.

2) Assists management with problem-solving solutions regarding equipment and/or staff.

3) Develops instructional roles to precept and mentor new employees as well as new Licensed Practical Nurses in the Operating room setting.

4) Participates in annual competencies (In-Service), plans and presents an In-Service with objectives.

5) Educate the staff of SPD with In-service or educational information regarding sterility.

6) Demonstrates leadership qualities.

7) Confidently assists the surgeon when necessary, utilizing critical thinking skills.

8) Evaluate and develop evidence-based materials to enhance learning (QI project relating to sterility).

9) Demonstrates knowledge in the use of pharmacological agents dispensed to the sterile field with the ability to recognize mixtures, doses, and labels in accordance with policies and procedures.

Skills:

Successful completion of LPN scrubbing orientation with competencies obtained.
