Lumber Inspector

PRIMARY PURPOSE: 

AHF Products has an opportunity for energetic and enthusiastic team player to join our team as a Lumber Inspector. Based in Norton, WV, you will be responsible for inspecting and grading lumber.  If you are dependable and would like to be part of a team that leans on one another, we have just the position for you. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Examine lumber on a moving chain conveyor to determine grade, species, and surface measurement of each board then place a value on the board. Enter grade and species of each piece of lumber into grading system at a production pace. Confirm package tickets for proper amounts. Reports production issues to supervisor. Ensure inspection slip is maintained in optimum working order by performing routine maintenance and repairs. Informs supervisor of any repairs needed beyond the scope of normal routine. Perform any other work-related task deemed necessary by the mill management.

Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment. Embrace a safety-first attitude and a healthy respect for machinery. Prefer working with your hands. Prefer to be on your feet all day. You are punctual and reliable. Ability to lift heavy objects and perform physically demanding tasks. Strong attention to detail and accuracy. Excellent time management skills to meet deadlines. Ability to work well in a team-oriented environment. Must have ability to pass corporate test of Math, Definitions, and Lumber Inspection. Knowledge of computer spreadsheet software helpful. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. The ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.  Ability to deal with few concrete variables in standardized situations. Good hand-eye coordination desirable.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Must be able to successfully complete and pass a background check, employment verification and drug screening.   Positive and Verifiable Work History.  Requires National Hardwood Lumber Association (NHLA) Inspector certification of Lumber Grading Short Course and four years’ experience. Approved company training and experience may be substituted for formal education/certification.

Push, pull, carry and lift 20 - 50lbs. Frequent walking and sitting. Regular stretching, bending, stooping, twisting, reaching, grasping and other such repetitive movements.  Must be able to communicate, hear, comprehend, and write in English.   Frequent exposure to dust. Exposure to noise environment requiring hearing protection. Must be able and willing to work in non-temperature-controlled environment, exposed to weather conditions.
