PURPOSE OF POSITION
The primary purpose of the student medical assistant is to learn how to put into action what she is learning in school, to provide clinical support to the physician/provider, provide patient and family education, and work cooperatively with the remainder of the office team.
RESPONSIBILITIES & EXPECTATIONS
Learn how to check provider schedules frequently for any add-ons or updates. Learns how to inspect a patient’s medical record prior to visit to ensure completeness as well as making sure the results of tests are available. Pre-visit planning/chart prep to be completed in between rooming patients. Learn how to accurately complete documentation in accordance with policy and protocol. Learn how to room patients, efficiently, making sure to utilize two patient identifiers and compare with chart. Learn how to and demonstrate obtain vital signs, height, weight, and current accurate list of medications and all pertinent information needed for the provider and learn how to assess the patient. Learn how to place leads and perform EKG according to policy and protocol. Learn how to schedule patient testing for various ordered tests This includes, but is not limited to, scheduling hospital procedures and out-patient tests. Precertification, authorizations, prior authorizations, physician orders, communicating with the patient, and scheduling with physician/provider if appropriate. Learn how to accurately completes medical forms and correctly completes and routes billing information to appropriate staff. (Example disability forms etc.) Learn how to draw up vaccines/medication and to administer them to patients according to policy and protocol. Learn how to copy and release medical records according to office procedures. Learn how to document properly, thoroughly, and legally in patient’s chart. Learn how to correctly educate patients for all testing and medications that are ordered. Learn how to answer phone calls from patients, document and forward appropriately and ensure all calls are returned by the end of the business day. Learn how to answer patient messages and ensure all patient messages are completed by the end of the business day. Learn how to complete medication refills on prescription medications according to policy and protocol. Learn how to notify the provider immediately of abnormal lab results. Learn how to restock and clean exam rooms after use according to protocol. Learn how to use the EHR to accurately document and inform provider of patient interactions. Learn how to schedule and reschedule patient appointments. Medical Student will work under the direction of a Certified/Register Medical Assistant or Licensed Practical Nurse, and will not perform any procedures, or documentation independently.
