Description
The Machining Operations Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the machining department in a precision machining contract manufacturing environment. This role requires a technically skilled and highly organized leader who drives continuous improvement initiatives, ensures the highest quality standards, and fosters a culture of lean manufacturing. The Machining Operations Manager will also be accountable for meeting production goals, optimizing key performance indicators (KPIs), managing department budgets, and contributing to the overall financial performance of the division.
Job Duties & Responsibilities:
•\tOperational Leadership:
Lead and manage the day-to-day operations of the machining department, ensuring production schedules are met with a focus on efficiency, safety, and quality. Collaborate closely with other departments (engineering, quality, maintenance, etc.) to support seamless production flow. The Machining Operations Manager will also be accountable for meeting production goals and optimizing key performance indicators (KPIs) such as cycle times, machine utilization, and on-time delivery. This role includes managing department budgets to control costs and improve operational efficiency, while contributing to the overall financial performance of the company by driving productivity and ensuring the machining department's output aligns with profitability targets.
•\tRecruitment and Performance Management:
o\tLead recruitment efforts for the machining department, including interviewing, hiring, and onboarding skilled machinists, technicians, and support staff.
o\tEnsure the department is staffed with highly qualified individuals who meet both technical and cultural fit requirements.
o\tConduct performance reviews, provide constructive feedback, and set clear performance expectations for team members.
o\tDevelop and implement individualized performance improvement plans as needed.
o\tRecognize and reward high performers, while addressing underperformance promptly and effectively.
o\tFoster employee growth by identifying development opportunities, training needs, and career advancement pathways.
o\tEnsure compliance with company policies regarding HR practices, employee relations, and disciplinary actions.
•\tTeam Management:
Supervise and mentor a team of machinists, leads, supervisors, and support staff. Provide coaching and development to improve technical skills, promote a culture of accountability, and enhance team performance.
•\tContinuous Improvement:
Drive continuous improvement initiatives using lean manufacturing principles to optimize machining processes, reduce waste, and increase throughput. Implement best practices in setup reduction, 5S, and standard work.
•\tLean Manufacturing:
Champion lean manufacturing practices throughout the department, focusing on value stream mapping, process flow improvements, and identifying bottlenecks. Lead Kaizen events and other improvement activities.
•\tProject Management:
Oversee projects related to new product introduction, machine upgrades, and process improvements. Coordinate cross-functional teams to meet project goals, timelines, and budgets.
•\tMachining Expertise:
Provide technical guidance and support to ensure the proper operation of CNC machines and other precision machining equipment. Troubleshoot machining issues, and oversee the implementation of new machining technologies.
•\tNew Product Introduction (NPI):
o\tCollaborates with Engineering, Quality Assurance, and Materials departments to assure all aspects of product development, product revisions, process changes, non-conformances, quality issues, and continuous improvements, etc. activities are carried out to meet customer quality specifications and delivery requirements.
o\tFacilitates and/or participates in NPI teams and cross functional reviews between suppliers, customers, and Chandler Industries to ensure successful launch and implementation.
o\tCoordinates with cross-functional teams to prepare documentation such as process flow charts, FMEA’s, Control Plans, operator instructions etc.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Skill & Experience:
•\tBachelor's degree in Manufacturing, Mechanical Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)
•\tMinimum 7-10 years of experience in machining operations, with at least 5+ years in a leadership role.
•\tStrong technical knowledge of CNC machining.
•\tFamiliarity with ISO or AS9100 standards.
•\tDemonstrated experience with lean manufacturing methodologies (Six Sigma certification is a plus).
•\tProven project management experience, including successful completion of complex, cross-functional projects.
•\tExceptional organizational and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
•\tExcellent communication and interpersonal skills with a focus on team development.
•\tProficiency in using ERP/MRP systems and manufacturing software.
•\tAbility to use Microsoft Office Suite (i.e., Word, Excel, Power-Point).
•\tAbility to foster relationships amongst teams and departments.
•\tKnowledge of general industry OSHA regulations and environmental protection practices and employment law.
•\tAbility to identify and evaluate complex, ambiguous business problems or technical issues and provide well thought out solutions. Proven problem solver who can build consensus and move the team to improvement.
•\tCapacity to lead and motivate people and obtain results through others.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $120000.00 - $170000.00
