This position reports to6Land Blvd. Cambridge, MA. *About the Division of Design and Engineering:* Continuing over a century of visionary land stewardship, DCR’s Division of Design and Engineering (D&E) collaborates with colleagues within DCR, other agencies, and communities across the state to plan, design, build, and maintain a diversity of outdoor recreational experiences and unique landscapes throughout the Commonwealth. In addition, our staff is responsible for maintaining public infrastructure including dams, seawalls, parkways and park roads, sidewalks and trails, and stormwater systems. This requires employing a diverse range of talent including architects, engineers, landscape architects, planners, tradespeople as well as business, finance and administrative support who work together to support D&E’s mission. Our staff is unified by a passion for providing access to high quality public open space and outdoor recreation for all ages and abilities, and strive to improve visitor experience, enhance universal accessibility, and help modernize DCR’s facilities and resources to be more carbon neutral, energy independent, and resilient to climate change. *General Statement of Duties and Responsibilities:* The incumbent operates heavy power-operated equip­ment such as Vactor trucks, clam shell vehicles, backhoes, front-end loaders and bulldozers used in the construction, maintenance and/or repair of highways, parks, etc.; operates heavy dump trucks, snow plows, sanders, tractor-drawn mowers and other equipment for highway and grounds maintenance; operates light vehicles such as passenger cars and panel trucks for transporting personnel and materials; performs routine maintenance on vehicles and equipment; maintains records and prepares reports; and inspects contractual services. The basic purpose of this position is to operate heavy power-operated and other equipment such as a vacuum excavating and drain cleaning truck and/or clam shell catch basin truck used for the maintenance and inspection of underground utility infrastructure. *Detailed Statement of Duties and Responsibilities:* * Operates Catch Basin Vactor truck and clam shell truck. * Performs drainage infrastructure maintenance and records information using Global Positioning System (GPS) GIS - Field Maps application. * Operates heavy power-operated equipment such as Vactor Truck, Clam shell, backhoes, front-end loaders, bulldozers and catch basin equipment used to construct, maintain or repair highways, parks or drainage systems. * Operates heavy dump trucks, snowplows, sanders, sweepers or tractor-drawn mowers or sickle bars to maintain highways and grounds. * Performs routine maintenance on vehicles and equipment such as lubricating, fueling, cleaning and checking tire pressure, battery, oil, water and coolant levels, etc. * Maintains records and prepares reports on such matters as vehicle use, mileage, destinations, accidents, gas and other vehicle expen­ses, such as fuel, repairs, etc. * Loads and unloads equipment and supplies; mixes and applies materials such as sand, salt, gravel, etc. * Performs related work as assigned. * Incumbents of positions at this level also: Operate equipment such as Underbridge Inspection Unit, Roller - Over 5 Ton; Loader 4 Cubic Yard or greater; Basket Truck - Over 30 feet; Hydro-Crane; and Cable Crane, etc. *Preferred Qualifications* * Familiarity with global positioning systems (GPG) to interpret maps, to identify construction sites and to record work locations * Knowledge of the laws, rules and regulations governing the operation of motor vehicles and heavy power-operated equipment used in exca­vating, grading and related construction activities. * Knowledge of the types uses and characteristics of heavy power- operated equipment used in excavating, grading and related construc­tion activities. * Knowledge of the types and characteristics of motor vehicles. * Knowledge of safety practices and procedures followed in the operation of motor vehicles and heavy power-operated equipment used in excavating, grading and related construction activities. * Knowledge of preventive maintenance procedures relative to heavy power-operated equipment used in excavating, grading and related construction activities. * Knowledge of the types and uses of snow removal and ice control equipment. * Knowledge of the types and uses of hand held power tools. * Skill in the operation of motor vehicles and heavy power-oriented equipment used in excavating, grading and related construction and maintenance activities. * Skill in using hand held power tools. * Ability to understand and apply the laws, rules, regulations, poli­cies, procedures, specifications, standards and guidelines governing assigned unit activities. * Ability to read and interpret documents such as plans, specifica­tions, blueprints, drawings, schematics, job layouts, etc. * Ability to read, write and comprehend the English language. * Ability to follow oral and written instructions. * Ability to maintain accurate records. * Ability to exercise sound judgment. * Ability to make decisions and act quickly in emergency situations. * Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others. * Ability to deal tactfully with others. * Ability to lift and carry heavy objects. * Mechanical aptitude. * Manual dexterity. * Physical stamina and endurance. * Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class B Motor Vehicle Operator’s License. * Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class 4D Equipment Operator’s License issued by the Department of Public Safety. * Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class 2A Equipment Operator’s License issued by the Department of Public Safety. *First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days.* *Minimum Entrance Requirements: *None.
