Maintenance Manager I

Purpose and role of job:  

Responsible for the overall maintenance of the Paper Machines.  Ensures all team members goals are aligned with department objectives and flow resources as needed to ensure the goals are met.  Provide consistency in work processes, training, employee development, and HR practices.  Ensure a strong relationship with the Production team and coordinate activities to ensure reliable processes from incoming pulp to final product.  As a member of the mill leadership team, develop and implement practices and initiatives to keep the mill competitive. This position is responsible for leading the maintenance processes in a manner that will have direct impact on profitability, efficiency, cost management, quality, safety, customer satisfaction, and innovation.

Principal Accountabilities/ Responsibilities:  

 1.    Leads and develops safe work culture through adhering to and maintaining all company safety rules, policies and standards.

2.    Exhibit strong core leadership skills – accountability, credibility, trust.  Demonstrate the leadership behaviors that lead to business results.

3.    Be a role model demonstrating the FQT “Rules of Engagement”.

4.    Ensure coaching, discipline, recognition, and handling of situations is consistent with HR policy.

5.    Grow hourly & salaried reports into their next role.

6.    Appraise and evaluate all exempt and non-exempt employees as required.

7.    Manage the Paper Machine Maintenance team to be a world-class maintenance organization.

8.    Utilize and promote the usage of the CMMS system to provide direction and assistance to maintenance personnel within the Paper Maintenance team.

9.    Promote growth of maintenance team by providing leadership in the development and implementation of: 

a.    Root Cause Analysis – documenting failures, analyzing repetitive failures, analyzing major failures, training maintenance and production personnel, develop/manage corrective action database, recommend and implement fixes for root causes. 

b.    Precision maintenance techniques – developing and implementing standards based repair procedures, documenting repairs, developing vendor standards. 

c.    Preventive maintenance programs – Develop tools and techniques to analyze and develop cost effective preventive maintenance procedures. 

d.    New equipment installations – providing assistance in developing standards based installation procedures for new equipment using best available practices. 
e.    Reliability improvements – identify, plan and implement projects to improve the inherent reliability of plant equipment. 

f.    Analyze operational data and equipment performance history to deliver improvements in critical maintenance related metrics including: unplanned downtime, PM compliance, schedule compliance, Mean-Time-Between Failures, and maintenance related costs.

10.    Improve the availability of our papermaking assets through: 

a.    Effective predictive maintenance program – developing and implementing a standardized monitoring program including vibration analysis, infrared inspections, non- destructive testing, and other Pdm techniques throughout the facility. 

b.    Effective maintenance planning and scheduling – participating in daily line meetings and weekly planning and scheduling meetings, providing vibration and lubrication analysis reports to aid in setting shutdown schedules. 

c.    Effective repair techniques – developing and implementing standards based repair procedures, documenting repairs, developing and implementing vendor standards. 

d.    Develop and deliver comprehensive maintenance and reliability tactical training to maintenance resources.

e.    Equipment Modifications – identify and implement modifications that reduce the time required to repair/replace equipment.

f.    Procedure Modifications – identify and modify procedures that reduce the time required to repair/replace equipment.

11.    Champion vendor services to maximize quality, performance and reliability of equipment repairs. Utilize vendors and OEM’s for improving the skills of maintenance personnel and for improving inspection routines. 

12.    Manage Electrical and Mechanical Engineers in an effort to improve equipment availability.

13.    Support all mill Reliability efforts including tank inspections, pressure vessel inspections, and burner tests. 

14.    Develop and create a vision for the maintenance team and implement it.

15.    Interface with Production, Engineering, Human Resources, Purchasing, Stores, and Utilities departments.

16.    Develop and maintain staffing plans to meet business requirements.

17.    Develop and deliver maintenance budgets.

18.    First Quality team members must follow all First Quality environmental, health and safety requirements as well as applicable federal, state, and local environmental, health, and safety regulations

Education and experience requirements:    

1.    Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or a related field.

2.    Proven experience in team leadership towards the implementation of maintenance goals and objectives.

3.    10 years’ experience in the maintenance field

4.    Three to five years’ experience in a Maintenance Supervisory position.

5.    Have a deep understanding of the planning and scheduling of maintenance work functions as they apply to predictive, preventive, precision, proactive, and planned maintenance.

6.    Standard knowledge of O.S.H.A laws and regulations within the manufacturing field.

7.    Fundamental knowledge of Worker’s compensation rules, regulations and an understanding of employee relations.

8.    Strong human relations and interpersonal skills.

9.    Advanced comprehension of the paper mill equipment mechanical/electrical functions.

10.    Strong problem solving skills in aiding the reliability of the operation.

11.    Strong communication skills.

12.    Proficient in MS Office products
