Responsibilities You will plan and determine the routing, placement, type, size, gauge, balance, load, continuity, and safe operation of circuits, systems, equipment, and controls. You will inspect and test systems and equipment for correct operation, flow, drainage, and sanitary conditions. You will lay out the installation and modification of systems, level of gas and water lines, and the location or arrangement of water closets, sinks, or fire sprinkler equipment. You will install, repair, modify, troubleshoot, load and test new and existing electrical lines, circuits, fixtures and controls for fire systems located in and near buildings. You will install, modify and repair new and existing utility, and supply systems and equipment, such as, water distribution systems and fire sprinkler systems. You will test and maintain Fire Protection Systems to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 25 Standard for the Inspection. You will inspect, test, repair, maintain, and install fire sprinkler systems, backflow prevention assemblies and plumbing fixtures and facilities Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element will be found ineligible. The Screen-Out Element for this position is: I have the ability to perform common tasks including: perform fire extinguishing systems mechanic duties, conduct testing and maintenance of fire suppression systems and backflow prevention systems; install and maintain fire suppression systems and backflow prevention systems for both wet and dry systems, work with both electrical and plumbing repairs.- Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Education Additional Information This announcement uses the Defense Industrial Base, Major Range and Test Facilities direct hire authority to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to certain positions in the competitive service. This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program. Several vacancies may be filled. PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work requires long periods of standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in other tiring and uncomfortable positions. Work requires accessing hard-to-reach places. Frequently lifts and carries item weighing up 50 pounds and occasionally heavier. Work is frequently performed while on ladders, scaffolding and platforms. WORKING CONDITIONS: The employee works in cramped quarters both in and out of doors where there is exposure to mud, dirt, dust, grease, bad weather, bad smelling fumes, etc. The employee will occasionally be required to wear a respirator to perform needed work. The employee will work on ladders, in lifts and aerial buckets requiring the use of fall protection. There is occasional exposure to the possibility of broken bones, burns from corrosives and regular exposure to the possibility of scrapes, bruises, injuries related to the use of power and hand tools, and infection from working at unsanitary work sites. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if the selectee fails to meet the pre-employment requirements, including failure to report to any of the scheduled appointments.
