Maintenance Mechanic
Summary This Maintenance Mechanic position is within the Facilities Management Service at the White River Junction VA Medical Center located at White River Junction, Vermont. This position is full-time at 40 hours per week. Responsibilities The Maintenance Mechanic performs carpentry, electrical, mechanical, and other duties in the maintenance and repair of a particular area as a team member of the Facility Management Service at White River Junction VA Medical Center, Vermont. Duties include but are not limited to: Independently performs carpentry, electrical, mechanical, and other duties in maintenance and repair. Make pressure and operating tests on new or replacement systems or equipment and assures proper circulation, flows, pressures, leak free installations and trouble free operation. Installs pipe covering insulation on completed repairs, modifications or installations prior to finalizing the work orders Responsible for strict compliance with established procedures and policies when working in the vicinity of asbestos pipe tank coverings or insulating materials suspected of containing asbestos. Performs regularly scheduled preventive maintenance on a variety of kitchen, medical, materials handling, and other equipment. Repairs and maintains food carts, laundry carts, metal furniture, stretchers (manual and hydraulic), manual beds, patient lifts (manual and hydraulic), pumps and air compressors throughout the medical center. Troubleshoots equipment malfunctions and failures and determines the extent of repairs and parts needed, estimated materials required, selects best work methods, techniques and trade practices and accomplishes the repair or overhaul. Responsible for selecting and safely using proper tools, devices, manuals, references and efficient procedures. Independently diagnoses, plans and completes projects or work orders involving routine repairs. Refers major breakdowns to supervisor for planning of overhaul or replacement. The incumbent must have knowledge and skill that includes the following: Laying of floor tile; Lock maintenance; Installing ceiling tile, lights and light fixtures, receptacles and switches; Plastering, painting, and carpentry work; Plumbing, such as minor repair of water and heating systems; Repairing of chairs; Installing door closures and door stops; Hanging bulletin boards, pictures, mirrors, fans, clocks, etc.; Installing casters on desks, chairs, food carts,. etc.; Mounting paper towel holders, signs, and corner guards; Installing safety treads on steps; Installation of storage cabinets and x-ray view boxes. Performs additional duties as assigned. Physical Requirements: The Incumbent works from ladders, scaffolding and hydraulic platforms. He/she often works in portions of the utility systems requiring attention that are cramped, dirty and hard-to-reach locations. The work involves prolonged crouching and standing and frequent stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing and working in exhausting and uncomfortable positions. The Incumbent frequently lifts or carries tools, equipment, ladders, scaffolding, parts and supplies up to 50 pounds. Occasionally, the incumbent will be required to lift and carry items over 50 pounds. Working Conditions: Maintenance Mechanics usually work indoors. However, they may be occasionally exposed to a variety of weather conditions, both ln winter and summer, in making repairs and installations on exterior work sites. During emergency repairs, extremes of bad weather are sometimes present. Many work sites are hot, dirty, dusty, greasy, poorly lit, cramped and with unpleasant odors. Occasionally, the incumbent will be required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment as necessary to accomplish assigned tasks in a safe manner. Education Additional Information Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
