Summary The Maintenance Mechanic works under the direct supervision of the Chief, Operations and Maintenance (O&M). Work is assigned on a long-term, as well as on a day-to-day basis. Work assignments will come from the electronic work order system, assignments from supervisor, or emergent situations as reported by medical staff center. Responsibilities Major duties include, but are not limited to the following: Electrical: (under direct supervision only) Work with and support associated shop members to plan material and equipment requirements, and ancillary support operations supporting identified work Use of all common electrical hand and power tools and testing equipment as required Repair light fixtures to include bulb, ballast, switch, and diffuser replacement Reset and troubleshoot circuit breakers; specifying replacement as required Tighten connections, wrap exposed wires with insulating tape, soldering loose wire leads to a contact point Install new outlets, relays, switches and light fixtures in an existing system; test circuits to ensure work is complete Carpentry: Operate and use a wide variety of specialty woodworking machines and tools Set up, adjust, and maintain tools to meet required specifications Assist carpenter's plan, measure and lay out carpentry materials using broad knowledge of wood materials and substitutes, with general and precise woodworking techniques Complete projects that involve constructing, altering, repairing, and/or modifying framework, doors, finished paneling, windows, and interior/exterior trim. Spacing, accuracy, fit, structural soundness and appearance are essential Repair/replace floor and ceiling tile, VCT flooring, wall time, corner guards, drywall, handrails, wainscot, and other miscellaneous items Plumbing: Repair and maintain plumbing systems Install, modify, and repair new and existing utility, supply and disposal systems Repair and maintain equipment such as water closets, tubs, showers, water distribution, and sewage distribution systems Work from building plans, blueprints, and sketches in order to plan and lay out the routing, placement, slant, slope, fall, and proper operation of systems and equipment Use tools and equipment such as plumb bobs, mercury gauges, dividers, closet augers, hydrostatic pumps and lead pots Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain steam systems, including backflow prevention values, steam control valves, radiators, and coils. Air Conditioning and Refrigeration: Perform duties regarding the installation, repair, modification, and preventive maintenance of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment Recognize the causes of faulty equipment using basic knowledge of the refrigeration cycle Follow local and national safety rules and regulations Efficiently use all specialized tools in the HVAC trade, such as measuring equipment, hand tools, and any other specialized tools unique to the HVAC trade Interpret blueprints, sketches, manufacturers' specifications, and technical manuals Be knowledgeable in shop math and standard formulas Replace portions of cooling units, such as compressors, condensers, expansion valves, float and service valves, thermostats, coils, and drive assemblies Service power sources by tightening connections, making splices, frayed or loose belts, gaskets, pulleys, as well as other similar defects General Maintenance: Must have knowledge and skills in the following: laying floor tile lock maintenance installing ceiling tile plastering, painting, and carpentry work plumbing such as minor repair of water and heating systems installing door closures and door stops hanging bulletin boards, pictures, mirrors, fans, clocks, etc. installing casters on desks, chairs, food carts, etc. mounting paper towel holders, signs and corner guards installing safety treads on steps Work Schedule: Full Time 7:30am - 4:00pm Position Description Title/PD#: Maintenance Mechanic/PD04716A Critical Skills Incentive (CSI): Not Approved Relocation/Recruitment Incentives: Not authorized Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The duties of this position require considerable movement around the hospital and involve bending, lifting, crawling through restrictive areas, and working from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms both in- and outside buildings. The Maintenance Mechanic must frequently lift objects weighing up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift equipment or materials weighing 50 pounds or more with proper equipment. Assignments may require standing, stooping, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. The Maintenance Mechanic works in all areas throughout the medical center. Inside areas may be dirty, dusty, and greasy and contain bad odors. The Maintenance Mechanic is: subject to danger of falling when working from ladders and scaffolds; exposed to moderately high noise levels; exposed to dust, fumes, and dirt; exposed to possible strains, cuts, electrical shock, bruises, burns, and infections; occasionally exposed to the possibility of broken bones. Outside duties are performed in all types of weather. The use of protective devices such as ear plugs, safety glasses, gloves, clothing, and safety equipment is required as needed.
