Maintenance Mechanic
Job Description

Food Safety Role & Responsibility:

 

The incumbent is specifically responsible for ensuring that:

1.  Training requirements are defined for all positions related to food safety and quality within his/her area of responsibility.

2.  Direct reports are trained to complete work assignments, evaluated for effectiveness and documented, and deemed competent to perform their jobs. When gaps are identified, immediate corrective action must be taken. This includes retraining, coaching, and/or disciplinary actions - which must be documented.

3.  Work assignments are communicated to associates.

4.  Where the assistance of external experts is required for the development, implementation, operation or assessment of food safety within his/her area of responsibility, records of agreement or contracts defining the responsibility and authority of the external experts are maintained, as well as records of appropriate education, training, skills and experience.

5.  New hire orientation is conducted, and a training matrix is developed for each area of responsibility.

6.  All elements listed in PROC 6.2.2 are enforced- not only those outlined above.

 

As an individual, the incumbent must understand the Food Safety Statement, complete the required training, perform work assignments in accordance with training and display an acceptable level of competency with all Quality Assurance/Safety/Security policies and training requirements. Areas of food safety training will include, but are not limited to, GMP, Food Safety Plan, Listeria, Food Safety and Quality Statement, FSSC 22000/Global Food Safety Policy/Food Safety Goals, Visitor/Food/Site Security, Emergency Preparedness, and Bloodborne Pathogens. Some additional items will include: Release of Maintained Food Contact Equipment, Tagging Equipment for Decontamination, Preventive Maintenance Laser Sorter, Lubricants and Equipment Oil Procedure, Preventive Maintenance Metal Detectors Unit, Daily and Weekly PM Prominent Tasks, Prominent System pH Probe Verification, Prominent System Chlorine Probe Verification, Preventive Maintenance and Work Order Procedure, Maintenance Reactive Repairs, Facility Maintenance Procedure, and Maintenance Utility Cart Cleaning.

 

The individual must also request additional and/or refresher training if he or she feels that it is needed to effectively perform requirements in specific areas of responsibility.


Summary:

 

Maintenance Mechanic A is responsible for safely maintaining, repairing, replacing and modifying all processing, packaging and facility equipment with optimal quality and efficiency. In addition, the incumbent possesses supervisory responsibilities and functions.

 



Work Experience

 

 

 

 

Job Function Statements – Essential Functions:

 

1.      Directs the daily activities and assigns tasks to the mechanics. This also includes training

          and monitoring the work of such employees.

2.      Assists in the procurement of parts and planning of repairs.

3.      Leads complex projects, preventive maintenance activities and repairs across the facility.

4.      Operate CMMS system and demonstrate 100% functionality in order to complete work

          orders as well as log corrective maintenance issues in the system.

5.      Effectively communicate with Technical Support, production personnel and other

          mechanics to identify problematic areas of concern; provide and receive feedback and/or

          support through collection and analysis of information.

6.      Perform electrical repairs and troubleshoot for the following: PLC Controls, AC & DC motor

          controls, solid state motor controls, advance circuits and grounding, interpret diagrams,

          and test equipment.

7.      Read schematics, drawings, and manuals to establish facts and draw valid conclusions.

8.      Perform emergency repairs: install, fabricate and modify stainless steel parts and/or

          equipment using shop equipment such as welding and cutting machines; weld utilizing

          electrode, TIG and MIG welders.

9.      Support facility maintenance equipment, which includes the following: waste water

          equipment, compressed air, refrigeration and building safety equipment.

10.    Must demonstrate an understanding of the company’s objectives including productivity,

          yields, food safety, quality, customer service and cost goals; daily work activities should

          support achieving those goals.

11.    Oversee or perform (as needed) daily inspections, emergency repairs, routine adjustments

          and follow periodic preventive maintenance schedule.

12.    Maintain organized documentation and inspection records; be prepared for a facility audit

          of such records and related processes.

13.    Model professional workplace conduct and adherence to company policies such as the

          Code of Conduct, attendance, punctuality, efficient and productive work habits, and good

          personal hygiene.

14.     Provide support to Process Improvement (PI) projects and participate on safety teams. 

15.    Serve as a resource to others to resolve mechanical and/or people issues.

16.    Perform other duties as required or assigned.

17.    Regular and reliable attendance is an essential function of this position.

 

Required Qualifications/Skills:

 

Physical Requirements:  the employee is required to stand for extended periods of time (duration of the shift, 8 hours or more); walk; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop; kneel; crouch; bend continuously; or crawl. The incumbent must be able to climb stairs and ladders or step up onto a platform several times throughout the shift; and is occasionally required to sit. The employee must be able to push/pull/lift and/or move 50 pounds. The incumbent must operate light motorized equipment, hand and power tools skillfully and safely. 

 

Work Environment: the employee is occasionally exposed to wet/cold conditions of 34 – 36 degrees and also at times hot conditions; high, precarious places (ex: 25 feet above ground level for extended hours); and outside weather conditions (rooftop). The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to occasionally loud, which may require hearing protection.

 

1. Must possess proficient mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic troubleshooting skills

    (logic and control circuits) and emergency repair skills; ability to identify and repair problematic

    issues concerning all equipment and machinery, including finding innovative solutions to

    recurrent problems

2. Ability to use multi-meter and other measurement instruments

3. Ability to read, write and speak English

5. Ability to direct and lead the daily Maintenance activities during the shift

6. Must work effectively in a team setting, as well as promote teamwork and cooperation

7. Ability to analyze work requirements and plan accordingly

8. Ability to cross-train other mechanics as well as production personnel

9. Proficiency with Microsoft computer programs: Outlook, Word and Excel 

10. Knowledge of National Electrical Code

11. Ability to work with single and three phase voltage

12. Must be capable of reading electrical/mechanical blueprints

13. Capable of troubleshooting and making the repairs on AB PLC's (programmable logic

      controllers)

14. Ability to understand schematics, drawings, and manuals to establish facts and draw

      conclusions

15. Ability to use a Computerized Maintenance Management System to track work orders, PM’s,

      and inventory.

16. Strong organizational skills.

17. Effective communication skills.

18. Ability to demonstrate math skills as part of daily activities such as fractions, decimals,

      percentages and the metric system; efficient with ratios, metric system, and formulas

19. Familiarity with preventive and reliability-based maintenance


Other Desired Qualifications/Skills:

1. Related bachelor’s degree or Maintenance Skills associate’s degree     

2. Ability to troubleshoot PLC controls, such as Allen-Bradley and GE Fanuc

3. Ability to demonstrate proficient fabrication and welding skills 

4. Bilingual skills (English/Spanish and/or English/Polish)

5. Food processing industry experience

6. Should achieve a passing score on the Ramsay exam

 

 

Experience:

5-7 years’ experience with industrial, high-speed processing, packaging, weighing, filling and inspection equipment.

 

Education/Training:

Minimum of a High School diploma/GED, some Technical School coursework, or Mechanical Certification (must have at least one of these three items to be considered).
