A Brief Summary of This Position

The Maintenance Technician position is a general maintenance position and an individual contributor position responsible for performing spinner clean up, general maintenance, writing work orders, troubleshooting machinery and having knowledge of facility level mastery of hydraulic systems and pneumatic systems.

 The Maintenance Technician must have general welding experience and have plant level mastery of electrical systems, knowledge of medium voltage (277-600v), valves, solenoids, and have detailed knowledge of plant systems, functions and machinery. Incumbent must be able to demonstrate fabrication of fixtures using welding, cutting and brazing.  Additional duties include identifying and adding new and efficient preventive maintenance tasks and working safely with the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).  Incumbent must adhere to Valmont safety training policies. The Maintenance Technician performs preventive maintenance and repairs on all plant equipment and facilities with a learned level of proficiency.  This person is also responsible for maintaining and repairing plant equipment, including pneumatic and mechanical systems, clutches, brakes, power transmission components, combustion engines, and electrical and hydraulic systems.  The incumbent performs basic electrical work and fabricates fixtures with limited to no instruction. This person is responsible for recording labor and materials used on each repair and provides some guidance, instruction and training to the Maintenance Technician.

Essential Functions:

Test, inspect, repair, troubleshoot and re-assemble basic plant equipment, components, and systems including but not limited to overhead bridge cranes, hoists, gear boxes, forklifts, company vehicles, pneumatic and mechanical systems, power transmission components, combustion engines, boiler systems, and electrical and hydraulic systemsPerform basic electrical work, and assist in highly skilled electrical workFabricate fixtures using welding, cutting, brazing, and surface hardening applicationsGeneral welding (can weld efficiently using stick welder) with the ability to lead and teach others in stick welding and detailed fabricationKnowledge of medium voltage (277-600v) including single and multiphase ac and dcCommunicate with supervisor and other maintenance and production team members via e-mail, phone, and face-to-faceResponsible for working with small hand tools including tape measures, micrometers, saws, drills, riveters, and nail guns and  maintaining tools and equipmentHave general welding (can weld efficiently using stick welder). ; Mechanical Repairs; Electrical Repairs; Troubleshoot MachineryTrain new employees; be able to teach and lead others in all facility related electrical concernsComplete record logs including labor, repairs made, equipment, and use of materials on the computerAbility to fabricate and repair metal structures and componentsMust be able to change out, clean and operate Spinners and be able to install Controllers and Control Equipment.Operate gauging equipment including tape measures, micrometers, and dial calipersResponsible for reading basic blueprints

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications

Actively pursuing an Associate’s or Technical degree in Industrial Maintenance or related fieldThe ability to interpret and fabricate components based on basic blueprints or specification sheets­­One year of experience with basic troubleshooting pneumatic, hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical systemsOne year of experience basic welding/fabricating metal structures/componentsClimb and work from ladders, man lifts, bridge cranes, and roofs in excess of 80 feetWork in adverse conditions:  wet, hot, dusty, dirty or cold

Educational Background

Requires adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing of whole numbers and fractions to perform calculations and conversions to and from metric and English measurement standards.  Must possess adequate communication and interpersonal skills to successfully interact with other employees.  Must display an aptitude for problem solving and the ability to plan for potential problems or needs. 

Job Training Skill Development

Maintenance Technician must demonstrate a minimum acceptable level of equipment specific knowledge within 12 months of on-the-job experience. 

Decision Making

Must be able to make decisions whether or not equipment can run safely or needs immediate attention for repairs.  The Maintenance Technician should be able to make recommendations to supervision and prioritize necessary repairs.  Service manuals establish standard procedures for some decision making.  Troubleshooting of pneumatic, hydraulic, mechanical, and electrical equipment may require independent judgment at the work site or at additional Valmont sites requesting maintenance assistance.

Physical Effort

The Maintenance Technician spends time climbing, lifting, bending, kneeling, crawling, pulling, stretching, and working in confined spaces and awkward positions, as well as working at heights.  Incumbent handles gearboxes on top of machines, changing brakes, motors on cranes, etc.  The average weight of objects is 30 pounds.  Incumbent spends 75% of his / her workday standing or walking, 10% bending or kneeling, 10% stooping, and 5% climbing.
