Maintenance Technician

Sandy Creek is a 900-megawatt coal-fired power plant located in Riesel, Texas. Consisting of one IHI supercritical pulverized coal boiler, one Toshiba steam turbine generator and Alstom air-quality control systems equipment, it is one of the largest new coal plants in the U.S., able to generate electricity for more than 900,000 Texas homes and businesses. The plant utilizes Powder River Basin coal.

Opportunity Summary

The Maintenance Technician (MT) is responsible for monitoring the status of all project systems on a continuous basis. The MT ensures that the plant meets its generating requirements while operating in a safe and efficient manner. Responsible for the safe and efficient operation, testing, inspection, and maintenance of all equipment related to an electrical generation facility. Performs work of high skill in the inspection repair, testing, adjustment, installation and removal of all mechanical power plant equipment and systems.

Primary Functions

Participates in daily preventative, scheduled, and corrective maintenance activities in a safe, effective, and timely manner Operates/maintains plant equipment at maximum operating efficiency Writes and maintains equipment logs, operational logs, and other reports as required in a clear professional manner Operates station vehicles such as forklifts, trucks, overhead cranes, and mobile cranes Reviews instruction manuals and develops troubleshooting procedures for equipment Demonstrates ability to use plant drawings, blueprints, and manuals Demonstrates knowledge of equipment layout and plant systems Reports upset conditions or other anomalies in plant status to the Operations Manager or Lead Maintenance Technician Performs emergency operations to maintain electric service and safeguard station equipment Is knowledgeable and adheres to all safety procedures including lock-out/tag-out and the use of personal protective equipment. Operates equipment safely and with the intent to minimize risk to personnel and equipment. Is able to read, understand and respond to written instructions and logbook notations Understands and follows regulatory requirements Establishes good working relations with teammates, team leaders, plant technical experts, and engineers Contributes to project profitability by eliminating wasted materials and supplies and maintaining high productivity Provides assistance with plant clean-up and housekeeping activities as required Performs other duties as required

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include the possibility of standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g., hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). Work with hazardous materials may be required. Must be able to be respirator qualified. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.

Fitness for Duty

All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening. 

Work Schedule

This position operates on a day shift schedule. Employees will work either:

Four 10-hour shifts per week (4x10), or Five 8-hour shifts per week (5x8).

The specific schedule will be determined based on operational needs and discussed during the hiring process.

Compensation

The initial hourly rate of pay will range from $37.93 to $53.17 depending on experience and qualifications.

Job Qualifications

Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment as would be acquired in four years of high school Two-year technical degree or equivalent is desired Experience as a power plant mechanic, millwright or equivalent Functional knowledge of mechanical components (valves, pipe fittings, bearings, motors, gearboxes, etc.) Proficiency in completely overhauling valves, pumps, compressors and other common balance-of-plant equipment as needed Ability to use basic hand tools, portable electric and pneumatic tools, and basic rigging equipment such as winches, hoists and slings. Ability to locate, troubleshoot, and adjust defects in mechanical equipment and/or maintain. Ability to read and/or interpret mechanical, pneumatic and hydraulic blueprints or schematics Strong organizational, prioritization, and problem-solving skills with focus on attention to detail Be able to work both independently and in a team environment Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with all levels of the organization both written and verbal Must possess a valid and unrestricted driver's license, ensuring it remains in good standing at all times.
