Position Summary:

The Housing and Dining Department is looking for a Maintenance Technician I to provide maintenance services for the areas it oversees. The Maintenance Technician will perform semi-skilled maintenance work, troubleshoot, and diagnose issues to determine the best course of action. This role involves conducting preventative maintenance, regularly inspecting buildings, addressing maintenance issues promptly, and assisting other maintenance, custodial, and craft staff as needed.

Workplace Requirements: 

On-campus position: This position is exclusively on-site, necessitating all duties to be performed in-person at [insert location and schedule]. Per Rice policy 440, work arrangements may be subject to change.

Work Environment: Primarily an indoor work environment in a variety of university settings, which may include offices, food serveries, and residential facilities. There may be exposure to temperature extremes in areas that are not climate-controlled, and the job might require working in confined spaces. Work Hazards: Some work may occur at heightened elevations on ladders or scaffolding, or in wet areas. Possible exposure to toxic and caustic chemicals.  Work Schedule: Weekly schedules may vary and will require working on weekends and holidays. Must be available for any shift as needed. Overtime will be required as needed Crisis Event: May be required to participate in ride-out or recovery efforts as needed, such as during storms, freezes, power outages, and other inclement weather closures.

Physical Demands

Moderate to heavy physical activity, which includes the ability to lift and carry objects up to 50 lbs, lift up to 80 lbs, bend, stoop, climb, balance stand, and walk up to 8 hours a day. Must be able to climb ladders and enter low mechanical spaces and be able to work at different height elevations This role is classified as an essential position, requiring on-site presence to effectively carry out its vital functions.

Hiring Range: $18.89 per hour+

*Non-exempt (hourly) positions under FLSA are eligible for overtime.

Minimum Requirements: 

HS Diploma or equivalent One year of related maintenance experience. Experience may not be substituted for the education requirement. Must possess (or have the ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire) and maintain a valid Texas driver’s license with no more than three moving violations and/or at-fault accidents within the past 36 months, and no convictions or deferred dispositions for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) or Driving Under the Influence (DUI) within the past five years. Must be able to speak, read, write, and comprehend English at an intermediate to advanced level Must communicate effectively with employees and customers Must handle multi-projects and stressful situations in a positive manner

Skills: 

Basic plumbing and electrical knowledge Basic repair skills and proper use of associated tools

Preferences:

More than one year or more experience of general maintenance or a related field, preferably involving maintenance of commercial buildings, mechanical systems and/or industrial maintenance Familiarity with different maintenance tools and construction crafts Good interpersonal skills and ability to work as a team with others Ability to work effectively in and around the public; maintain cooperative working relationships; demonstrate sensitivity to, and respect for, a diverse population Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions

Essential Functions:

Perform preventative maintenance on facilities and equipment. Conduct general maintenance and repairs, including the upkeep of buildings and the fixing of plumbing, lighting, doors, windows, blinds, and furniture. Troubleshoot and diagnose issues to determine the appropriate course of action. For more complex issues, coordinate diagnosis and repairs with supervisors and create work orders. Inspect, repair, and clean machinery, equipment, tools, and work areas. Make recommendations for materials and supplies needed to maintain inventory. Assist other maintenance technicians and crafts Performs all other duties as assigned.
