Maintenance Worker
Summary This position is located within the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Northeast Area (NEA), at the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center (BARC) in Beltsville, MD. In this position, you will install, maintain, and repair HVAC, electrical, plumbing and refrigeration systems. Responsibilities Perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs such as replacing belts, motors, cleaning coils, valve replacement and filter replacement for various HVAC systems. Install drywall and tape joints to produce a smooth wall surface. Inspect, maintain, and repair water, sewer, air, gas, vacuum and heating systems, including some steam and hot water systems. Use and understand diagnostic and test equipment. While a specific length of time and experience is not required for most Wage Grade positions, you must show through experience and training that you possess the best qualified level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of this position. Qualification requirements emphasize the quality of experience, not necessarily the length. The responses to the questionnaire and your resume should be in significant detail to provide the person rating your application with a good understanding of your ability to do the job, technical knowledge, work, and training experience, etc. (For example You must have the ability to perform the duties of a, Maintenance Worker without more than normal supervision (screen Out). Physical Effort Works from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms at heights up to 60 feet, and where the surfaces, systems and equipment worked on may be in cramped or hard-to-reach places. Required to walk, stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and generally work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, handles, carries, and sets up materials, parts and/or equipment that may way up to 90 pounds (using equipment or hand trucks/ forklifts for the safe handling). Working Conditions Works is performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. Outside work often exposes the incumbent to adverse weather conditions, such as extreme heat, cold, and rain. The incumbent is subject to the usual hazards associated with conducting maintenance work. Work is performed in ducts, chases, tunnels, attic crawl spaces, and sometimes under extremes of temperature. The incumbent is subject to danger of falling from ladders, scaffolds, and through floor openings, and is subject to cuts, bruises, punctures, burns, scalds, shock, dust dirt, noise and hazards of falling objects. In addition, the incumbent is subject to exposure to paint fumes and irritation of eyes, skin, and respiratory tract from sanding and dusting surfaces. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Education This position does not have an education qualification requirement.
