Summary This position is located within a National Forest. The primary purpose of this position is to perform a variety of duties involved in the upkeep of buildings, grounds, and related structures, fixtures, and utilities. Assignments will also include maintenance involving general carpentry, painting, plumbing, operation of tools and equipment, custodial services and general laborer tasks. Responsibilities Performs various minor building maintenance, both interior and exterior. Carries out small painting projects inside and out, including the use of tools and equipment such as sandpaper, paintbrushes, rollers, and spray guns. Prepares surfaces, cleans brushes and equipment. Mixes and thins paints, applies primer and finish coats to surfaces. Performs general carpentry work in which the finished appearance of work products is not the primary consideration such as simple construction and repairs. Uses a variety of common hand and power tools and basic assembly and fastening procedures. Assists higher graded workers with repairs to plumbing such as toilet flush mechanisms, toilets, rusted drains and traps, faucet washers, faucets, and sinks. Clears plugged fixtures such as toilets and sewer lines. Performs a full range of custodial duties in office spaces, government housing, public restrooms and visitor use areas to maintain a clean and sanitary condition. Sweeps and mops floors, vacuums carpets, dusts woodwork, washes windows inside and outside of buildings. Cleans and disinfects floors, lavatories, urinals, and toilet bowls and replaces restroom supplies as required. Collects and removes trash and recyclables. Keeps stock of cleaning materials, restroom supplies, and equipment needed and informs supervisor when more materials are needed. Performs minor maintenance on equipment. Adjusts, oils, and changes buffers, brushes, rollers, and other attachments on machines used. Uses ladders and scaffolds when necessary to clean or replace ceiling fixtures and light bulbs/tubes throughout buildings ensuring items are turned-in according to environmental regulations. Operates powered equipment such as scrubbers, polishers, buffers, vacuum cleaners, and attachments. Obtains, cleans and cares for materials, tools and machines necessary for building maintenance. Performs monthly checks and updates for safety equipment following guidelines and standards in compliance with direction given by unit Safety Coordinator. Participates in quarterly inspections of the buildings and grounds, notes are taken and safety items are addressed and action needed is noted and communicated to supervisor and safety coordinator. Completes Hazmat inventories and keeps current. Obtains MSDS sheets, maintains master binder and ensures inventory sheets are kept in storage areas with products. Operates motor vehicles in performance of assigned duties. Loads and unloads materials and equipment. Assists Fleet manager with inspections, data collection, vehicle cleaning , minor maintenance and use coordination in accordance with established instructions, rules and regulations. May perform a variety of laborer tasks such as clearing brush, policing grounds, waste disposal, mowing, landscaping, repairing damaged roadways and walkways, cleaning ditches, leaf and snow removal. May operate power mowers, small tractors, and use spades, hoes, rakes, hand mowers, clippers, saws, snow-blowers, leaf blowers and pruning shears. Moves office and special event furniture and equipment to meet changes in space and room assignments.
