Summary The Maintenance Worker Helper for the VA St. Louis Health Care System (VASTLHCS), Facilities Engineering Service, is responsible for general maintenance and repair requirements as established by the Maintenance and Operations Leadership. Major duties include, but are not limited to: Determining material requirements, diagnose trouble and make necessary repairs to a variety of equipment. Following specific procedures for environmental cleaning on own and without instruction. Working safely with chemicals, tools, and equipment. Maintaining the correct tools to complete work in plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, housekeeping, and general mechanical. Repairing plumbing fixtures, repairing faucets, unplugging stopped-up plumbing fixtures and repairing leaks of various kinds. Making repairs in the major medical buildings and other buildings on campus. Receiving assignments verbally or in the form of written requests, or on minor repair boards, by way of work orders or One Call requests. Performing full range of cleaning duties, ensuring that the area of responsibility is within acceptable levels of cleanliness. Running powered cleaning equipment, lubricating and changing brushes. Working from ladders cleaning ceilings, walls, light fixtures, and medical equipment. Cleaning all types of medical equipment used in various areas. Designating tasks to be performed by other housekeepers to ensure work begins. Identifying problems to supervisor and receiving necessary guidance. Checking work performed to ensure it meets supervisory directives on policy, procedure, sequence schedule, method, and safety. Promotion Potential: This position is for WG-5. There is no promotion potential for this position. Work Schedule: Full-Time, Monday-Friday, 12 hour rotating shifts Position Description Title/PD#: Maintenance Worker Helper/PD09963A Virtual: This is not a virtual position. Duty Station: Jefferson Barracks Division; however, the duty station may be changed to one of multiple locations within the VA St. Louis Health Care System based on the needs of the facility. Physical Requirements: Considerable standing, stooping, and bending is required. Climbing and working from ladders and scaffolds in stretched, cramped, or awkward positions is necessary. Using a hammer and other hand tools necessitates considerable arm and hand movement and dexterity. Items up to 50 pounds are lifted and carried. Items over 50 pounds are infrequently carried or others assist in movement. Working Conditions: Works long, rotating shifts. Works both inside and outside. When inside, frequently exposed to drafts, changing temperatures, and noise. When outside, is exposed to bad weather, works in mud, and in wet or icy areas. Exposed to irritations and discomfort from dust, grease, heat, and fumes. Typically inspects parts, equipment, and systems, which are dirty, oily, or greasy. Subject to cuts, burns, chemical irritations, bruises, electrical shock, and injuries from falls while positioning and moving equipment. Follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as protective hearing devices, hard hats, hard-toe shoes, gloves, and protective clothing. Some safety equipment may be hot and uncomfortable and will be worn for long periods of time. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
