Job Summary

The Maintenance Worker I - Athletic Fields position involves routine tasks involved in the care and maintenance of City of Rockville and Montgomery County athletic fields. The work requires regular contacts with Recreation and Parks employees, with other City employees and athletic field users and periodic contacts with contractors and the general public. The physical demands are moderate and sometimes considerable requiring working with heavyweight materials, equipment and machinery. The working conditions are somewhat disagreeable due to the occasional exposure to elements such as dust, heat, fumes, cold, noise, vibration and moisture. Incumbents work independently and work is subject to general supervisory review. Incumbents are required to work various shifts and overtime as needed.

Essential Job Functions

As part of a crew, performs required labor involved in the maintenance of athletic fields, within the City of Rockville and some athletic fields outside the Rockville City limits.Operates push mowers, walk-behind mowers, riding mowers, line trimmers, edgers, blowers and other parks maintenance equipment.Inspects fields and top dresses, aerates, seeds and replaces sod as necessary.Prepares fields for games including dragging infields, measuring and marking field lines, installing bases, filling holes, preparing mounds, removing water, ensuring proper placement of goals, etc.Operates hand and power spray equipment in spraying grasses, and shrubbery to control growth, disease and insects.Inspects and repairs athletic field equipment such as nets, backstops, benches, dugouts and bleachers.Mixes and applies chemicals and fertilizers.Waters, fertilizes, cultivates, trims rakes and edges grasses.Picks up and disposes of trash and empties trash cans and recycling containers.Moves heavy supplies and equipment and climbs ladders in order to accomplish tasks.Removes trash, leaves, snow and ice from outside stairs, walks, parking lots, bike and walking paths, etc.Ensures proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools after use.Drives trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling, and unloading of various equipment and materials.Follows and enforces recommended safety practices.Reports damage to facilities and equipmentPerforms minor carpentry, electrical, mechanical and other maintenance and minor construction work.Assists and fills-in for other staff when necessary.Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for this position applicants must demonstrate possession of all the training, experience and required licenses, as a well as demonstrate a practical knowledge, skills and abilities that would allow the applicant to perform this job in a successful manner. This will be determined through review of the formal application, rating of education and experience, and where appropriate, the interview, reference and background checks, and may include job related skills assessment. Graduation from high school or any combination of training and experience substantially equivalent to a high school diploma. Some experience in the maintenance of athletic fields preferred. Possession of an appropriate valid driver's license and the ability to obtain, a valid motor vehicle class CDL operator's license prior to completion of the initial probation period.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of the methods and equipment used in athletic field maintenance work including measurements of lines and equipment for various field sports.Some knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions for the proper execution and usage of a variety of mowers and power tools.Ability to follow oral and written instructions.Ability to perform tasks, which involve prolonged standing, pushing, pulling, climbing, and stooping.Ability to handle and operate light and heavy hand and power equipment.Ability to independently perform maintenance duties.Ability to read and interpret chemical labels, written instructions and operation manuals.Ability and willingness to perform other duties as assigned; including but not limited to snow removal, storm debris clean-up, assistance with special events and other emergencies at times other than regularly scheduled work hours.
