The job of Equipment and Standards Engineer requires an individual to be self-directed with a strong ability to manage transmission and substation equipment procurement for multiple projects as well as manage equipment standards for the Transmission & Substation Engineering group within FirstEnergy.  An understanding of Transmission and Substation Design and Equipment is required.  The successful candidate will work within a multiple teams of internal and external engineers and specialists engaged in a variety of engineering design to develop equipment specifications, procurement documents, bid packages, and bid evaluations for transmission and substation equipment.  The engineer will be responsible for equipment tracking and reporting through the procurement cycle to delivery.  This person will identify and address issues that could impair the successful completion of projects.  This position will be expected to develop as a subject matter expert (SME) and provide technical support to Substation and Transmission personnel, Project Management and Substation crews.  Responsibilities also include supporting company safety standards, project budgets, record accuracy, and project in-service dates.

Responsibilities include:

Creating engineering standards for substation and / or transmission projects. Preparing bills-of-material and specifications to procure needed equipment and materials for substation and transmissions projects. Providing engineering support to employees to assist in their learning of substation standards, procedures, designs, and associated issues. Analyzing standards and equipment issues and recommending appropriate solutions and alternate design options. Reviewing manufacturer drawings for compliance with specifications. Managing equipment orders for Substation and Transmission projects from the initial request for equipment through delivery (technical details, bid evaluation, schedule, drawing review, design review, action items, testing, and delivery). Evaluating equipment ratings and requirements, and project schedules to facilitate the accurate ordering of equipment. Working with outside consultants, vendors, and equipment manufacturers. Researching and exploring new technologies that support reducing the environmental impact, equipment standards, automation of work processes that increase efficiency and improve accuracy. Supporting and sustaining FirstEnergy as a high performing organization by contributing to excellent organizational performance and values of FirstEnergy through responsible effective work performance. Convening internal project schedule compliance review meetings with the necessary parties to assure deliverables support project schedule and are within the project budget. Participating in equipment design reviews and plant audits at manufacturer’s facilities or virtually as needed. Conducting test witnessing at manufacturer’s facilities as needed. Supporting updating equipment specifications, including reviewing against industry standards. Supporting updating Substation and Transmission standards, including reviewing against industry standards and best practices. Participating in industry meetings as a FirstEnergy representative (i.e. IEEE, EPRI, etc.). Maintaining a safe workplace for coworkers and the community based upon knowledge of potential hazards and industry regulations / requirements. Providing assistance during emergencies and storm related activities.

Qualifications include:

Bachelors of Science degree in Engineering, Electrical preferred (BSEE) from an ABET accredited institution is required.  Acceptable alternatives are: (1) a Professional Engineer’s (PE) License (2) a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Civil or Mechanical Engineering or technical field of study (non-ABET) plus an advanced degree in Electrical, Civil or Mechanical Engineering from a university with an ABET accredited Bachelor’s program. A Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Certificate is preferred. Minimum of 2 (two) years of Engineering experience is required. Demonstrated leadership skills; capable of communicating, motivating, and driving positive change and improvement. Experience with FirstEnergy design sufficient to assure compliance with FE engineering practices, engineering standards, budget practices, field practices, equipment specifications, and maintenance practices. Knowledge of equipment manufacturing processes preferred. Understanding of substations, substation equipment and devices preferred. Experience with maintenance, testing and configuration of substation devices preferred. Project Management experience preferred. Ability to read and understand substation design prints and bills of material preferred. Ability to manage a large number of projects simultaneously, work effectively to meet deadlines, project scope changes, budget constraints, and provide field support required.   Working knowledge of the following software programs preferred – MS Office, Cascade / AutoCAD / FileNet / QlikView / and SAP. Strong interpersonal skills to develop effective working relationships with employees at all levels across the FE organization as well as with manufacturers. Ability to effectively present complex subject matter to all levels of management. Ability to support numerous locations, ability and willingness to travel throughout the service area and to manufacturer locations as needed. Travel will be expected to include work outside of a normal schedule. To support travel must possess a personal vehicle and valid driving license.
