Manager, Associate Underwriting
This position is responsible for the daily operation of an assigned team of associate underwriters and support personnel; the team is assigned to a manager based on functional responsibilities. This position manages the performance of the team to ensure the delivery of exceptional service to American National agents and policyholders. This position ensures that policies and accounts are maintained in accordance with company, state, and federal compliance standards.
What will you do?
• Demonstrates policy and account-level underwriting and contract knowledge, state-specific knowledge, system, process, and procedural knowledge.
• Establishes a series of periodic quality assurance reviews to ensure compliance with established processes and procedures. Monitors internal controls to ensure all processes and employee actions remain compliant. Communicates with employees regarding the results of these reviews and holds employees accountable for following performance standards.
• Communicates with agents and employees to ensure the successful delivery of policy service and regarding escalated service matters and makes judgment-based underwriting decisions that are referred to the management level, keeping in mind what is best for the company and the client, while remaining compliant with all decisions.
• Monitors employee productivity and adjusts work assignments based on individual employee experience, knowledge, other responsibilities, and performance.
• Assists in queue management as necessary to ensure the proper workflow and timeliness of policy service work. Reports the team productivity results to the Director, Assistant Vice President, and Regional Field Executives.
• Reviews and approves certified and verified policies that are compiled by the associate underwriter team. Works within tight deadlines to fulfill certified policy requests that are received from the Claims department, reviews and approves all refunds within the authority level, and appropriately refers those above the authority level with recommended action.
• Maintains open communication with other members of the leadership team to ensure that all factors are included in project decisions and to ensure the appropriate dissemination of committee-based decisions.
• Participates in and represents the associate underwriter team on the line of business project teams. Reports learnings and decisions to members of management and to direct reports. Has active involvement in workflow discussions with other members of leadership to ensure that ongoing efficiency improvements are implemented.
• Identifies areas where training is needed for experienced employees. Ensures the proper backups are in place for all positions and for all departmental responsibilities to ensure the delivery of outstanding service and the elimination of work disruption.
• Communicates with the training department regarding the development of new procedures and revisions to existing procedures. Decisions are often made by the management team regarding changes to the process and are then fully vetted with the training department before the processes are defined in written form.
Required Qualifications
• Four to six years of experience.
• Two to five years of supervisory/management experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
o Associates degree in risk management, business administration, management, communications, accounting or a related field
Salary for this position can range from $68,000.00 for candidates who are minimally qualified through $85,000.00 for more highly qualified candidates. Candidates outside of the range are encouraged to apply, and will be considered based on experience, skill, and education.
