Within the Publications Division, C&EN (Chemical & Engineering News) produces authoritative, award-winning journalism from around the world of chemistry. C&EN’s website receives more than 13 million page views per year. Within C&EN, the newly formed Digital Solutions Team will have a key responsibility in our transformation into a digital-first news and analysis publication. Data will play a crucial role in informing decisions that support innovation and user-experience across all platforms through the department’s key functions: editorial, production, business operations, and content delivery. At each stage the Digital Solutions Team engages stakeholders across C&EN, the Publications Division and Communications.
C&EN is recruiting for a Data Solutions Manager to serve as the leader of the Digital Solutions Team. In this role, the Data Solutions Manager will steer C&EN’s Platform Strategist and Platform Operations Manager to consider the business dimensions and user experience using data-centric analytics to drive decision-making. The Data Solutions Manager will leverage data to identify the needs which the Platform
Strategist will research, and prototype and the Platform Operations Manager will implement.
The Data Solutions Manager will play a crucial role in supporting C&EN’s transformation which requires the publication to grow its audience across the global chemistry enterprise and increase quality engagement with content. The Key Objectives for the Data Solutions Manager include but are not limited to the following:
Support C&EN leadership in providing quality journalism that provides the global chemistry enterprise with insight Take a leading role in steering C&EN’s business decisions to deliver the desired growth in audience development and user behavior Build out systems and partnerships across ACS operations to deliver the targets for C&EN’s growth and the ACS strategic objectives Develop a dynamic and high-performing team which reflects the values of C&EN and the ACS Publications Division.
Primary Responsibilities are as follows:
With input from C&EN leadership, develop and execute data-driven solutions and strategies to enhance business performance within a SaFE Agile framework. Lead and mentor a team of two Digital Solutions Team staff, fostering a collaborative and innovative work environment to achieve business goals and objectives. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify data needs and provide a responsive data architecture. Translate complex data and analysis into clear, actionable business solutions. Ensure data integrity and compliance with industry standards and regulations. In partnership with the Communications and Publications Divisions, develop and maintain dashboards and reports to track key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics. Regularly audit existing sources to ensure that appropriate data are captured. Coach, mentor, and support team members and other stakeholders on Agile practices and to build our data literacy and overarching audience research capacities.
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s Degree required. Additional role-related certifications desired. Minimum of 8 years of experience in data analytics, including demonstrated experience working with instruments for qualitative data capture. Minimum of 3 years of experience as a people manager or technical leader, with preference for candidates who have managed through institutional change. Experience in the media industry, with a strong understanding of industry-specific challenges and opportunities. Experience developing and mentoring direct reports, managing performance, and developing high-performing teams. Strong proficiency in data analysis tools and software (e.g., SQL, Python, R, Tableau), project tracking tools (e.g., JIRA, Confluence, Adobe Workfront), and content management systems (e.g., Adobe Experience Manager). Record of success delivering successful business solutions, ideally within a SaFE Agile environment. Expert-level skill at translating data and analytics needs and opportunities into actionable agendas. Ability to collaborate effectively with and speak the language of technical development teams. Strong background in using data to deliver business-critical insights. Understanding of and ability to align with business goals. Excellent leadership and management skills with a preference for developing high-performing individuals and teams. Ability to communicate with a wide range of stakeholders, vertically and horizontally; internally and externally (e.g., contractors and vendors). Strong aptitude for relationship building with the ability to influence directly and indirectly. Excellent written and verbal communications capabilities and presentation skills that extend to both technical and nontechnical audiences.This role is based in our Washington, D.C. office. A reasonable rate of compensation for this position is between $105,000 – $130,000 per year.
