The Manager of Database Services oversees the strategic planning, development, maintenance, and optimization of an organization’s database systems and services. This role involves managing a team of database administrators (DBAs) to ensure the availability, security, and performance of databases that support critical business operations. The manager will also work closely with other IT departments, business stakeholders, and external vendors to align database services with the organization’s goals.
ResponsibilitiesLeadership & Team Management:
Lead, mentor, and manage a team of database engineers.Develop team skills through training and continuous learning opportunities.Set goals, evaluate performance, and provide feedback for team members.Manage team resources and allocate personnel for database projects.Database Design, Maintenance, & Performance:
Oversee the implementation and maintenance of relational databases (e.g., Oracle, ASE/Sybase, SQL Server).Ensure optimal performance, tuning, and scalability of all database environments.Monitor database performance and proactively identify issues to resolve or escalate.Implement database best practices, policies, and procedures for performance optimization.Security & Compliance:
Manage and ensure database security, access controls, and data privacy according to organizational and regulatory standards (e.g., PII, HIPAA, etc).Ensure the implementation of backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity strategies for all databases.Work with security teams to manage database audits, vulnerability assessments, and penetration testing.Collaboration & Stakeholder Management:
Collaborate with development teams, IT operations, and business stakeholders to ensure database support for applications and services.Act as the primary point of contact for database service-related escalations and issues.Ensure alignment of database services with the organization’s strategic goals and IT architecture.Project Management & Vendor Relationships:
Lead database-related projects, ensuring timely delivery and compliance with business requirements.Coordinate with vendors and service providers for database licensing, support contracts, and external services.Manage budgets and costs related to database infrastructure, licensing, and services. Qualifications Education Level: Bachelor’s Degree; Major: Information Technology, Information Systems; Degree must be from an accredited college or university. Experience in lieu of required education is acceptableCertifications Preferred: Oracle Database Administrator (DBA), Microsoft Certified: Azure or SQL Server Database Administrator, AWS Certified Database – Specialty7+ years of experience in database administration and management.Proven leadership experience managing a team of database professionals.Hands-on experience with multiple database technologies, including relational and NoSQL databases.Expertise in database performance tuning, backup and recovery, disaster recovery, and high availability architectures.Strong understanding of database security practices and regulatory compliance.Excellent leadership and team management skills.Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects in a fast-paced environment.Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
