Job Summary 

The Manager, Detection Systems – Mechanical is responsible for overseeing the integrity of the Mechanical Detector Systems network by ensuring detector standards are met across the system. In addition, the role is accountable for the day-to-day oversight of detector health, maintenance schedules, troubleshooting, and reporting.   

Main Responsibilities 

Conduct daily audits to ensure the detector network functions as intended 

Develop and maintain standards and templates for detector implementation, maintenance, and validation 

Provide technical support for detector installations, maintenance, algorithms, and reporting 

Analyze departmental metrics regularly to identify and address common issues 

Develop and implement new tools for detector monitoring 

Collaborate with suppliers to enhance product quality and service 

Assist Supply Management with technical knowledge and field data to secure the best overall value 

Work with Information and Technology (I&T) to ensure proper integration of detector data with CN Systems 

Oversee new detector installations on-site 

Coordinate preventative maintenance trips and calibrations for detectors 

Support and develop machine vision systems within the Mechanical department 

Develop, test, and deploy software enhancements for detection systems 

Conduct quality analysis of detector software and data 

Lead and perform investigations on detector alarms 

Working Conditions  

The role is performed in a combination of office and outdoor environments, often in various weather conditions. The standard workweek is Monday to Friday, but the role requires being on-call 24/7 to respond to critical incidents. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure, and stress. The role requires occasional travel (up to 45%) within Canada and the United States (U.S.). 

Requirements 

Experience 

Wayside Detector Technology 

Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience with wayside detector technology 

Experience in project management 

Education/Certification/Designation 

High School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED) 

Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical, Electronic, Computer Engineering, Engineering Technology, or equivalent or relevant experience 

Competencies

Technical Skills/Knowledge 

Comprehensive working knowledge of Mechanical Detection systems 

Knowledge of Electro-mechanical systems 

Familiarity with software system architecture and development 

Knowledge of computer networking and cyber security 

Knowledge of Microsoft Office including SharePoint 

Knowledge of track engineering and detector installations 

Fluently bilingual, both written and verbal (English, French)* 

Familiar with Systems, Applications, and Products (SAP), Business Objects (BO), Power BI, ServiceNow* 

*Any knowledge for any of the above would be considered as an asset
