Manager, Engineering

Basic Function:

Responsible for the delivery of quality, accurate, compliant, timely and cost-effective gas system infrastructure designs for distribution expansions, public works relocations, pressure improvements, DIMP replacements, and other gas system infrastructure improvements for AGL and CGC.  Also responsible for Engineering support of AGLC and CGC Operations, System Operations, Corrosion, and other Company departments along with external stakeholders such as state, county, and municipal public works departments, other governmental entities, business developers, and end-use customers.

Representative Duties and Responsibilities: 

Approve project designs include the detailed review of estimates, material selection, and compliance with regulatory requirements, company standards and industry best practices for Public Work/DOT, System Renewal, Pressure Improvement, Relocations, DIMP, TIMP, System Reinforcement, Pressure Regulation and Control, New Customer Expansions, and other Operations support projects. Support the development, prioritization, and execution of the annual capital improvement budgets of approximately $600MM including discrete projects and multi-year programs as well as up to a 10-year planning horizon.  Prepare and administer capital and operating budgets according to plan for areas with direct design responsibility including explanations, budget variances, and forecasts.  Coordinates with Director, other Engineering Managers, and Business Support team to evaluate and adjust capital work to meet Company targets. Oversee, support, innovate, and optimize the work products of respective divisions and areas of responsibility within department including New Business, Public Works/DOT, Territory Support, Pressure Regulation, Transmission, Training & Development, etc. Support, formally develop, and coach direct and indirect employees supporting the work of the department including skill and knowledge development and performance management. Remain abreast to department morale and culture to support maintain a positive and productive environment. Maintain and improve department progression model.  Serve as the Engineering lead alternate for Incident Support Team and Major Incident Support Team as needed. Providing technical support to incidents and emergencies. Serve, if requested, as the Engineering lead for the NTSB team in GA & TN which includes 24/7/365 response to major emergencies where the NTSB gets involved. Represent Engineering on multiple committees and initiatives from technical standards to process development to major systems and IT enhancements potentially including external committees like GUCC, AGA, etc. Support Engineering & Construction budget and rate proceeding efforts for AGL & CGC from development and prioritization of up to 10-year capital budgets to writing or delivering testimony to Regulatory agencies for rate case and other proceedings. Establish and continuously improve departmental processes, service levels and engineering deliverables for internal and external customers. Remain fluent in current and new gas regulations, company standards, and industry best practices and direct this knowledge to improving departmental and company processes, procedures, and results.  Develop strategies designed to improve the delivery of cost-effective projects and transparency of prioritizations including the ranking of projects based offsetting risk and operating expenses. Develop and maintain positive and productive relationships with applicable stakeholders including vendors, service suppliers, regulators, state/local public works personnel, etc.

 Education and Experience

Required:

BS in recognized engineering discipline, ABET accredited institution. 7+ years of engineering, construction, or operational experience in an LDC/Energy Industry field Minimum of 5 of 7+ in engineering with significant design and regulatory code experience 3+ years supervisory experience

Preferred:

Professional Engineer Certification Master's Degree – Technical or Business

Specific Skills & Knowledge:

Strong knowledge of regulatory codes and industry standards 49 CFR 192, ASME B31.8 Demonstrated ability to proactively analyze, innovate, and improve processes, procedures, and results  Exceptional leadership capabilities Project management proficiency Geographic Information Systems proficiency Strong MS Office and advanced Excel proficiency Strong analytical, multi-level communication, and written and oral presentation skills Technical writing proficiency             Experience with AutoCAD or MicroStation design software Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks effectively and act decisively

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

 

The position is primarily office-based. Occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts, fumes, airborne particles, chemicals, and outdoor weather conditions may occur.
