Manager, Equipment Engineering and Operations

The Position:

Veracyte is seeking an experienced and dedicated Equipment Manager to join our team to support research, development, and production laboratories. This individual will lead the Equipment Engineering and Operations team responsible for managing and tracking all laboratory equipment across sites in California and Texas, including high-tech instrumentation such as spectrophotometers, analyzers, and pipetting robots. The ideal candidate will have extensive hands-on experience with Hamilton STARline robots in CLIA labs and a deep understanding of equipment maintenance, regulatory compliance, and documentation. The ideal candidate is based in San Diego, CA however applicants in the San Francisco Bay Area will also be considered. This is a primarily on-site role with travel of approximately 25% expected.

Key Responsibilities:

Team Management: Lead a team of equipment engineers and specialists, ensuring efficient operation and maintenance of all laboratory equipment across regulated laboratory sites. IQ/OQ/PM Design and Planning Develop and implement IQ/OQ plans, preventative maintenance activities, and PM schedules to minimize downtime and extend the lifespan of lab equipment. Design and write IQ/OQ, PM reports as necessary and instill best practices in team members. Equipment Troubleshooting and Maintenance: Perform and oversee the maintenance and calibration of standard and high-tech lab instruments, including sequencers, thermocyclers, pipetting robots, and other critical equipment. Perform troubleshooting where possible, reducing reliance on vendors and instilling a team culture of self-sufficiency and cost reduction. Service Vendor Management: Coordinate with equipment vendors for maintenance, calibration, and repair services. Understand service contracting levels and proactively negotiate service and repair contracts to be both robust and cost-effective. Regulatory Compliance: Work closely with Quality Assurance team members to ensure all equipment meets CLIA, CAP, IVD, and/or FDA regulations, maintaining up-to-date knowledge of regulatory changes and implementing necessary adjustments. Record Keeping: Maintain accurate and detailed records of equipment maintenance, calibration, and repairs, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. Oversee the creation and management of all equipment documentation, including manuals, logs, and reports. Fleet Management and life cycle planning: Work with key stakeholders on developing equipment lifecycle policies, equipment acquisition, and equipment disposition. Work with key stakeholders to analyze metrics of aging equipment and develop equipment phase-out and replacement plans as necessary. Dashboard and Reporting: Generate equipment status and usage dashboards and reports, report metrics to Operations leadership and financial planning teams. Training: Provide training and support both within and outside the Equipment Engineering and Operations Team on the proper use and maintenance of lab equipment. Travel: Travel and oversee equipment at multiple CLIA/CAP accredited sites. Travel appropriately 25%

 

Who You Are:

Experience: Minimum of 7 years of experience in the clinical diagnostics industry, with a focus on equipment repair and equipment fleet management in clinical labs.  2+ years in a supervisory role highly preferred

Technical Knowledge: In-depth understanding of lab equipment maintenance, preventative maintenance cycles, and regulatory compliance (CLIA, CAP, IVD, and FDA). Training in one or more major laboratory equipment platforms such as Hamilton Robotics, Unchained Labs, Tecan, Beckman, or Illumina strongly desired. Leadership Skills: Proven ability to lead and manage a team, with strong organizational and communication skills. Attention to Detail: Exceptional attention to detail in record keeping and documentation. Problem-Solving: Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot and resolve equipment issues efficiently. Strong reasoning skills to make evidence-based decisions required. Education: Bachelor's degree in a related field (e.g., Biomedical Engineering, Clinical Laboratory Science) preferred.

The final salary offered to a successful candidate will be dependent on several factors that may include but are not limited to the type and length of experience within the job, type and length of experience within the industry, education, etc. Base pay is one part of the Total Package that is provided to compensate and recognize employees for their work, and this role may be eligible for additional discretionary bonuses/incentives, and restricted stock units. Veracyte is a multi-state employer, and this salary range may not reflect positions that work in other states.

Pay range$140,000—$156,000 USD
