Humboldt Redwood Company, LLC (HRC) is seeking a Manager, Forest Sciences to join our Forestry team based in Scotia, CA!
The base salary for this position is $140,000.00 to $185,000.00. Your final base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as geographic locations, skills, education and/or experience. Please keep in mind that that the range published is the full base salary. We also offer a generous benefits package.
The Mendocino Companies (Mendocino Forest Products Company, Mendocino Redwood Company, Humboldt Redwood Company, Humboldt Sawmill Company, and Allweather Wood) own nearly 450,000 acres of Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC® C031337) certificated redwood and Douglas-fir timberland, constitute the largest waterborne wood treater in the Western USA, and is the largest producer of redwood lumber in the world. Collectively providing 950 employees and their families with excellent wages and benefits in communities throughout the Western USA. Additionally, the Mendocino Companies own and operate a 25-megaWatt biomass cogeneration power plant and wood pellet plant.
The Manager, Forest Sciences must become operationally familiar with company lands, wildlife, and habitat types along with habitat conservation plans, scientific monitoring protocols, and safety procedures. Expertise in one or more areas of physical, ecological, and/or biological sciences pertaining to wildlife and fisheries protection and conservation is typical of the position. The position requires an effective communicator who shares data, analyses, recommendations, and professional opinions within the Forestry Department, and with company executives, State and Federal Agencies, and other stakeholders. The position requires a detailed understanding of statute, regulations, and policies and programs governing actively managed private forest land in CA.
Responsibilities Provide leadership and cohesion within the Forest Science Department and its multidisciplinary team of natural resource professionals including wildlife and fisheries biologists, botanists, hydrologists, and geologists.Coordinate, schedule, and conduct (when necessary) surveys and monitoring activities required of the Forest Sciences department.Advise forestry staff and executive management team regarding wildlife conservation measures and compliance with state and federal environmental policies and regulations.Prepare statistical data evaluations, and related tables, figures and graphs.Perform scientific analyses, and complete technical reports documenting data results and, where appropriate, management recommendations.Effectively present the results of Forest Sciences analyses in both private and public forums.Coach employees for attainment of Company and individual goals and objectives in accordance with Company guidelines.Interview, hire, and train employees; plan, assign, and direct staff work; appraise performance; address complaints and resolve problems with assistance from Human Resources when needed.Ensure safety protocols and procedures are understood and adhered to.Prepare and implement Forest Science Department annual work plans, budgets, and associated financial forecasts. Qualifications Bachelor's degree (B.S. or B.A.) from a four-year college or university in Biology, Forestry, Natural Resources, or related field; and a minimum of 5-years of related experience and/or training. Master’s degree (M.S.) may substitute for experience.Ability to use directional compass, topographical maps, and GPS to safely navigate the forest lands.Familiarity with and ability to use Geographic Information Systems.Working knowledge of MS Excel, MS Word and MS Outlook, PowerPoint, database applications, and similar software programs.Must maintain and carry a valid California driver license and remain eligible and capable of operating company vehicles including automobiles, trucks, all-terrain vehicles, and large 4-wheel drive vehicles in accordance with company policy guidelines.WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The employee is frequently required to walk, sit, and communicate. The employee is frequently required to stand; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. This position requires the following personal protective equipment: above ankle boots, eye protection, hearing protection, leather/rubber gloves, hard hat, and ATV helmet.Position has travel requirements typically of a local nature (e.g., within 150 miles one way), but may also need to travel longer distances for presentation, trainings, conferences, and the such. The employee is occasionally required to safely navigate outside in adverse weather and field conditions including walking in steep and difficult terrain.As the employee is occasionally required to use four-wheel drive, ATVs, and chainsaws, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles.The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.Position may require work early in the morning, night work and a sometimes irregular schedule.Work alone or with small groups in remote areas.
