Job SummaryThe Digital Media Commons (DMC) in the James and Anne Duderstadt Center (DC) at the University of Michigan (U-M) is looking for a qualified services manager who will coordinate services for the Ground Connections (GC) team. If chosen, you will oversee operations of four labs (Groundworks, Design Labs 1 & 2, and Fabrication Underground) including planning and development, budgets, procedures, and personnel management. You will report to the Chief Operating Officer of the Duderstadt Center. This is considered a hybrid onsite/work from home position at the Duderstadt Center on U-M's North Campus in Ann Arbor.

Responsibilities*Oversee operations of all four Ground Connections labs, ensuring compliance with federal, U-M, and Digital Media Commons regulations and goals.Be a DMC Leadership team member, making decisions about building operations, annual equipment purchases, policies, procedures, and fundraising for the good of the DMC unit.Teach various classes as requested by Schools and Colleges.Manage the GC budget.Plan and develop procedures and policies for the GC team.Manage GC personnel (including hiring, training, leading, and authorizing work schedules for lab coordinators and student staff). Write annual performance reviews. Recommend promotions or changes in job status for lab coordinators.Gather lab data and participate in writing the annual Duderstadt Center Statistics Executive Report.Recommend needed equipment for GC labs.Required Qualifications*Minimum of eight years of experience in managing a maker space, fabrication lab, or similar environment.Bachelor's degree in a technical field (i.e., Engineering, Manufacturing, IT).Extensive experience in managing staff, with a minimum of two years' experience supervising and developing team members.Strong organizational, and communication skills.Extensive experience in troubleshooting a wide range of maker equipment, including 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC machines, and electronics.Proven leadership and financial management skills.Ability to implement software automation skills to streamline processes and enhance maker space operations.Proficiency in creating learning materials and leading workshops.Proficiency in working with media, including video production, photography, and multimedia creation.Experience teaching relevant classes, with at least two years of teaching experience at the high school level or higher.Experience mentoring students at a high school level or higher.Ability to work independently and as part of a team.Commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive community.
Work Locations
This position is classified as hybrid with work on campus a minimum of 3 days per week.
Modes of WorkThe work requirements allow both onsite and offsite work and an employee has an expected recurring onsite presence. On occasion, the employee may be required and must be available to work onsite more frequently if necessitated by unit leadership or their designee and/or the job requirements.
